What makes a good Free Link Directory?

    G'day all,

I have a free non reciprocal link directory (biginfosite.com)I don't charge for anything at all to submit your site.

I accept everyone, except for racially abusive, homophobic and hate sites.

I hope to make money from displaying advertising in the header eventually.

As yet I have no PR, but hope to change that. I plan for the site to be big, but as I only started it as a directory last week, obviously it's only small. I have had the domain for a few years and the site has been a few different things over the years. I am settled on its current incarnation and plan to leave it as is. I like the site now.

I am working hard on promoting it, spending about an hour a day submitting to directories, signature in forums etc. I am not going to let it get run down and am slowly using SEO etc to build up the PR.

Question is - Is my site a good free directory? If not, why not?

What do I have to do to make it as big as Digg or other huge directories? I know that's a big ambition, but that's my dream.

    Thanks

    Boomer.

interesting look, not sure it says 'general directory' to me, more like 'funky gaming site'. I am not sure you are using SEO friendly URL's for your links so there would be no search engine benifit to listing (just looked briefly so correct me if I am wrong).

Maintaining a free directory is very, very difficult. Lots of work for little or no pay, discourages most people in the long-term.

You can read my article on owning a free directory here.

Try to run it as if it were a paid directory, review all submitted sites. Make sure the description isnt spammy or the title to long etc.. and put them into correct categories. Only difference is you wont be able to spend as much on promoting it as you would a paid directory.

Dont give up on it, you should work on your directory everyday at least a few hours, and dont let the submitted sites get built up too much. If you work on it everyday you shouldnt have to worry about that. You can still make money as a free directory even when you first start.. sell featured links cheap and sitewide links, use this money to buy links or signature links here at DP for more exposure.

Once you gain some PR.. it will be easier to sell featured links as you should already have alot of links in your categories.

A quality free directory has pretty much the same as a paid, to be classed as quality

time & effort spent on it
    a quality design
    no spammy links
additional extras, such as blogs, games etc
    good mods (deep links etc)
