I wouldn't spend it all on one thing. I'd try out small amounts of different types of marketing (eg adwords etc), then analyze my logs and see which drives how much and what sort of traffic. Only then would I invest much money in marketing.

Put maybe $300 into a few different types and see which returns the best visitors first.

I would spend it developing a membership site. You get a list, affiliates, and residual income all in one neat little package. ;)

i hear good things about membership sites...but...what would the memberships be for? i know the adult business is full of them but what about the normal sites. what would you offer that would make it worth subscribing to a membership?

hmm not working for me, the site is either down or taking really long to load. but with 2,000 people what is the subscription like? even if it was like 1$ a month thats still very good for one site.

I have over 2,000 members, but it is free to join. I make my income from the ones who chose to upgrade to paying members. And also through the sale of credits. 1 Credit = 1 page view.

It's really simple......You offer a service for free. Then you offer upgraded version of the service, it's basically the same free service, just with a little extra worth paying for.

$4000 buys a lot of link love :)
I would spend some of the money on text links / reviews and some on AdWords.
Some kind of giveaway contest would be great too.

    1)
    Quality Link building campaign:
    Seeking permanent theme based links.
    Budget:$100/mo at least for 5months.
This will no doubt help you to rank better on your search teams on major search engine.

    2)
    Directory submission and Article Submission.
Directory submission for 1000 directories will cost you around $50 on DP’s Service area.
It will help you to build links. And drive some permanent traffic to your website.
    Same for Article submission.
At least 1 niche article per week .This submission it will cost your around $15 per article with submission to major 300 article directories.

    3)
Purchasing PR5+ links on heavy traffic website which suits your niche.
This will definitely bring traffic and increase your SERP.
It will cost you around $50 onwards per link.
Text-link-ads.com is the place where you can find those sites.

    4)
Start your affiliate program and tie-up with CJ.com and click bank.
This is the best way to market any product on internet. Major Internet tycoons win their business battles by a strong affiliate network.
Click bank charges you $49 for account opening.
    I don’t have Idea about CJ.com.

    5)
Last but not the least, Google Adword.
If you want visitors in 10 minutes this is the way.
It’s very easy to setup an account with google adword.
    http://adwords.google.com/select/Login
Here you will get every detail about it.

There are two well known methods for advertising on search engines.
    PPC and CPM.

PPC stands for Pay per click.
If you don’t want to take risk with your money and if you want guaranteed visits this method is good for you.
In PPC you can set your daily budget.

CPM stands for Cost per thousand impressions.
Google is having strong publisher network and it covers 85% net market.
You can choose any Niche website for your advertisement. it will cost you 0.25+ CPM.
If you’re confident enough about your product and have knowledge to create catchy ads this is another good Option for PPC.

These are the major ones there are still thousands of like social bookmarking, Stumble etc.

But if I have $4000 in my hand then these are 5 major areas where I will work.

    Thanks
    D.Maind.(WM7)

Yes, spread it. Various promotions (articles, adwords, directories, press releases, interesting contest, funny home-made commercial on youtube, etc.) But it really depends who is your target audience. ;)

I would simply use it to get the message of your site across to real websites with users that would be interested in whatever you are offering. Both banners and Google Adwords are good ideas in the right market. I wouldn't spread the cash too much though as it may end up being ineffective - but if your site is really good and unique then perhaps that won't really apply.

I think the best promotion however is simply happy customers and word of mouth. Nothing is better than a forum post from an experienced long time user of that particular forum praising your company/site. The contents of that post will grow into all the users who see it.

I would need to know what your site is about though to give you more exact details.

Pretty good suggestions so far. I'd put some effort also on contests and perhaps spend few hundred bucks to get a few quality reviews from high ranking / traffic blogs. (Naturally it depends what you are after, but I suppose getting respected figures to talk about your product could help in some instances).

If you want to spend the budget entirely on marketing, I'd suggest that rather than asking in the forum (where you'll get a lot of generic of "here's what worked for me" responses) you instead hire a consultant (preferably one who specializes in your niche or with reaching your target market). Have them work with you on putting together a custom marketing plan and tailoring tactics and such to not only your needs, but your remaining budget.

Haven't tried it myself, I am actually leaning towards Robert Puddy's Launch Formula Marketing script, which is the same thing. Reason being I am friends with Robert and two I know the programmers needed to make changes that I want.

I will be buying his script today actually so I can get this report out to people:

I think the best way to spend that kind of money, is to spend it on SEO.
There is nothing better then search engine traffic.

Other than natural word-of-mouth traffic... which unfortunately most webmasters don't experience enough of because they don't put the effort into it.
