Powell: Close Guantanamo, Restore Habeus Corpus

This morning on NBC’s Meet the Press, Gen. Colin Powell strongly condemned the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, calling it “a major problem for America’s perception” and charging, “if it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo — not tomorrow, this afternoon.”

He also called for an end to the military commission system the Bush administration has created to try Guantanamo detainees. “I would simply move them to the United States and put them into our federal legal system,” Powell said. He scoffed at criticism that the detainees would have access to lawyers and the writ of habeas corpus: “So what? Let them. Isn’t that what our system’s all about?”

If Powell believed this then why didn't he speak up when he served under the Bush administration? Probably because he knew it would be political suicide, but Powell has allowed a number of years to go by and Bush's trampling of our system of justice go unchallenged. If he didn't have the courage to stand up and speak his mind back when he was in a position to possibly do something about it, what good does he think he is now?

 

I think they should open another Gitmo & ship off a few DPers to that one, we can call it Ditmo

Put the "Bill O'Reilly pocketbook" away for the evening mate and try thinking for yourself. Gitmo is a very bad thing, why the f*ck do you think it is located outside of the US? Because it wouldn't be tolerated inside the US, you simply cannot hold people for an indefinite time period without any access to lawyers and no oppertunity to defend themselves. It is unacceptable.

 

AGS is awfully concerned about what is in BO's pockets these days. Me thinks AGS would love to share a big box of popcorn with him.

 

He also seems to be very concerned for his buds in gitmo. But when his fellow countrymen were illegally captured by Iran, he actually supported Iran and sold his country out.

Oddly enough, I saw him "peeping" in the stoning thread that sammie started today, and not a peep from him.
