Lots of talk about the new immigration legislation. All for the illegals of course.
    Pretty sad IMO.
As a legal immigrant myself, I can 'see' my conversation with the authorities from here:

Hello, I'm legal, how can I get my definitive paperwork? It's been 13 years now...
~Sorry, but you're legal, this is only for illegals...
Oh, so I can't get a green card for example?
~Nope, if you were a cheater or if you acted outside the law, then yes...
Shoot...I did it right and now I'm penalized??
~Yes sir, this is only for people who are doing illegal stuff. It's not your case. You're free and clear and you're following the rules and laws. There's nothing I can do for you. So have a nice day now. Next...

In Europe, they give papers to everbody, no questions ask. To men, women, homos, jews, muslims, handicaps, terrorists, lawyers, gangsters, inventors, DP members, thiefts, homeless, Canadians, astronauts, transexuals, surfers, you name it...

I am a legal immigrant too, and I wish I wasn't. Goberment provides a lot of incentives to illegals and non-taxpayers. I didn't even get SSN for my daughter when she was born for that reason. I have friends who are here illegally and they are not sure they'd legalize even if they could.
That "earned path to citizenship' for criminals stuff is BS. Not only middle class provides them with free education, health care, etc., but they now want to make illegals to be eligible for SS - which is already bankrupt. I am not sure you can even call it 'middle class' anymore, people pay so much taxes they can't afford what used to be basic things, like a house.
It pays to be a criminal.

I agree. A deep reform is a must.
I began in 1994, while investing in Real Estate.
I got my SSN this January 2007 only. It's a big step.
Let's be honest, I should get GC between 2015 and 2020.
But for now, I'm still in the process for my wife's SSN, so she'll be able to drive. The problem: we came legally.
If illegals immigrants get GC, I'll stay legal but my wife will destroy her paperwork and put herself in the illegal immigrants line...So we should get stuff wayyyyy faster...
It's much easier in Europe. In Brussels, there is the C.P.A.S. for immigrants with no paper, no money, no roof, no nothing. They MUST help you, it's the law...

I wish I never got SSN. SS and Medicare are bankrupt, it's a waste to pay into them. You can get a driver's license from a state that doesn't require SSN to get one

But an address is needed then, right?
If so, at least 2 documents are asked, like utilities bill or something...

I'm in TN. They are so racists here, it's unbelievable...
The other day, these people were disturbed by the fact that I pulled over on a parking space. Hearing my french accent, and since I'm white, they told me to go back to New-York !!! :D

Eh, that's nothing. I am Russian, I called on the phone and opeator heard my accent and decided to transfer me to Spanish line. I only know a few words in Spanish and none of them can be used in a polite conversation
If your wife absolutely has to drive and you can't get DL without SSN, I guess she'll have to suck it up, just don't count on seeing any money that she pays into SS fund ever again. I didn't get SSN for my daughter and she's not in danger of paying into SS when she grows up, or that IRS will steal 1/3 of her property from her children under pretense of 'estate tax' when she dies.
The system is designed to redistribute wealth from middle class Americans to anyone who will take it...

If the issue is just a drivers license. AFAIK. every states has it own laws in giving drivers license. Me myself as a tourist got a temporary license in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and once it was expired it can be extended if you wish too. But man, I tell you what I failed the first written exam.:D.. Regarding on SSN I think there are 3 types of SS .. SS for US citizen, SS for Not valid for employment and SS for Valid for work with INS authorization... I think it won't take a year for your wife to get SSN since you both are legal resident of US. I guess she can get atleast one of those 3 types of SSN but I preferred the 3rd 1.

We working on the 3rd one, yes. But, you know, we're legal since 1995 and on visa since then. Last package was a I-797E, Notice of action. So, we'll see. Indeed, it's been more difficult year after year and after 9/11, we had to do much more than scheduled...oh well...
My daughter was 1 y/o when we got here. She's 16 now and no rights whatsoever. she can't go back to belgium either, ...well she can but no rights neither...too long outside the country.... I'm not worry, she'll get married eventually...

I've been reading some of your's, and others, posts on Social Security and other benefits. I think that the first thing that you need to do is get your information from someone else. Someone's giving you some incorrect information. The Social Security system will not be allowed to fail. It may change somewhat but it will not cease to exist. If you fail to pay into SS you cannot draw any benefits when you reach retirement age or get on Medicare. If you aren't able to put away a hell of a bunch of retirement money when you're young then society will have to support you when you get too old to work. Even with SS you still need to put away money. The rule of thumb is to figure on having enough money when you retire to equal your working pay. Even more is better since you will have more free time to spend money after retirement.

Also, if your daughter doesn't have a SS number she will not be getting very many jobs in her future. You have to have a SS # to work in the US. The only kind of jobs available without a SS # are almost always minimum wage jobs paid in cash. The kind of employer that does that kind of business is very seldom in business very long and has a tendency to leave their employees short of pay. Remember, the employee has no one to complain to.

Learn how the system works here in the US.

Technically that may be correct. It's in the interest of the Congress to keep it going. They'll just raise taxes and lower payouts. Congress consistently steals money from SS fund and spends it for unrelated purposes.

You will not be able to draw much from it weather you pay into it or not. Medicare has been bankrupted by Congress... But, if you don't pay into it you can only avoid jail or fines if you don't have a SSN.

I wouldn't count on that, more likely you'll die in poverty unless your children support you

Now that would be pretty difficult to do, since you send 16% of your annual salary to SS Administration instead of saving it for retirement

No, it's a birth right of every American, granted by Constitution. SS Administration admitted it on many occasions. In any case, I prefer self-employment.

Well take this story from the illegal immigrants pov. Why would they come to America in the first place? Flee their country from persecution, seeking better living conditions, better education, etc. They apply legally, no cigar. They are forced to come illegally.

Now this is where the problem lies... what to do with these people who came here illegally. IMO, there are two paths a person could have taken. One is a life of crime (not paying taxes, lying low) the other is the legit path (pay taxes, apply for legalization, go through the court system).

Either case, those who are legal, should get a GC right away. The illegals should have a point based system to clear their name (no crime, paid taxes, have children, family, education, etc).

Granting amnesty to all illegals or kicking them all out is stupid. Keep the people who have a positive effect on the US in and the criminals out.

I am tired of seeing all the pro-illegal groups get involved...how about instead of worrying about an amnesty deal we just work on closing the border? Wouldn't that be a better answer?

Immigration problems are at the source.
Everybody should pass through an embassy first.
However, and because embassies use to deny everybody, people just cross borders.
If the embassies automatically give a yes to all visa BUT UNDER CONDITIONS, then no need to borders IMO, or very little.
    Conditions would be:
Clear background, pass english exam, business plan to report to local authorities regurarly, show evidence of integration, and more...
