Which Laptop/Notebook ??

    I need one..like, big time!

The PC is just too confining, not too mention it's beginning to show signs of sporadic seizures :(

So I'm in search of a laptop. I'm hearing many people mention that it is pretty much a MUST to upgrade with 2GB DDR if you're running Vista.

Anyway..... My budget is $600 - $999 and I'm looking for something mainly for business with a little gaming in the mix.

    Here's what I'm considering.

Any opinions on this laptop or any suggestions on a different one would be wonderful.

    THANKS!
    -Jake

IBM and then rest of the world.

I saw specs on model you plan to buy. Great options. But, my opinion: display size is too big for notebook. Battery - no chance to last 3 hours except it is in sleeping mode. With 17" display and with wi fi turned on I think you can expect about 1.5 to 2 hours of work or even less for pleasure (movie, game).

Also, AMD is heating to much. Take care on your balls.

FYI, I bought MSI last month and I took search on notebooks for a while before buying. It was cheap model with fine battery (same price range and battery as your favorite). 14" wide display. And even that size is big (I have 19" wide on desktop). Also, weight was important for me: 1.9 kg which makes that model one of lightest on market.

If you cant buy IBM (or you don't want) consider Intel, 8 cell battery, 1 GB ram and up to 15" wide display).

    Just my opinion. Good luck.

I have an HP dv8230us laptop

I've had it for over a year now. absolutely no problems. dual 80GB hds (160gb total) 1GB ram...upgradeable. 1.66Ghz. What I love the best about its look is the BrightView technology screen which rocks. I dont regret buying it except that I bought the 17" widescreen one. I would rather buy the 15" one now since its a bit smaller and more compact...other than that, its one of the best I've had so far.

Toshiba fans suck! They have problems (atleast with their satellite model) from my personal experience!

That's a tight budget.. there are dells... I would say a macbook but that's double your budget!!

IBM use to make the best laptops, but I don't think they are making them anymore. Yes, you can still by them but another compay actually makes them but uses IBM name.

Mac notebooks are suppose to be great...I've used them lightly, but don't own one myself.

If you want to go the cheaper, but consistant route, HP is good and solid. Good buy for the money. ;)

MacBooks are great for running multiple OS and if you do web design it sure beats carrying around 2 laptops to check browser compatibility.

Since the Intel Chip I believe it's a lot faster than it used to be since you don't have to emulate an x86 CPU anymore. I believe you can run Vista or XP at native speed. Check out Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac screenshots. Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links yet.

You'll get a pretty good DELL or ACER in that price, much better then the specs you gave (newegg).

17" is a little too big for a laptop considering that you'll be closer to the screen as compared to a desktop.

Well yeah, 17" might be too big to lug around if you're traveling, but I agree with RovingCalypso in that Dell or Acer is perhaps your best bet. I've owned an Acer and they're pretty solid...it lasted me a good 6 years without any hardware problems whatsoever (besides that they were getting a little outdated hehe).

I use an Acer and they are cheap but very good for the price, however i dont think that I would recommend it, go for a laptop from Toshiba or HP because they are much better built. Dells tend to be very cheaply made with a lot of cheap plastic. For a Sony you pay too much, your basically paying for a nice looking laptop, and for a Mac, I seriously wouldnt go there unless you want to use a Mac specifically. Anyway these are my opinions
