What should I buy to get the most for the money. I dont need the newest of everything.
And Vista basic is good enough ? I mean I use progs for everything, I dont need a media center or what ever.

I have monitors and graphic card, need the rest.

    Please advice.

Go for a ready made computer, they are now much cheaper than custom made and easier to find parts to match.

Get at least 1GB of ram memory but opt for more. The newer software is eating up memory.

I would avoid HP and Compac (same company) I have seen more and more problems with their computers.

I have had great luck with Emachines and they offer a whole load of features for less cost than most big name brands. Just be sure not to buy without comparing. Find what you are interested in and research the heck out of it.

Find out how easy it is to upgrade, how many free slots, if parts are easy to find, etc.....

    that's a screaming deal!
especially since they now have the Core 2 Duo (the successor to the regular Core Duo). BUT (generally) expect to pay a lot more than AMD too!

I wouldn't recommend Vista Basic to anyone. Even Microsoft warns that it is only for basic purposes. I would instead go for personal or business edition.

As for a computer, http://abs.com has some great deals. They are the cheapest yet best quality of all the companies I reviewed when I bought my computer. I have no regrets, and saved a lot of money on expensive parts.

    Good luck.

AMD is really crappy right now, I really would not go with them. I personally really feel as if the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best processor to go with right now for price and performance.

I'd say a decent Intel Core 2 Duo processor
Graphics card, if you're not into games, just get a 7600GT, if you are, get a 7800 or higher GTX series video card with 512 MB of Vram.

Ram, for mediocre performance, get 1 GB, but for good performance, get 2GB.
    Dual channel.

HDD, you should get at least a 250GB drive 7200RPM, but I recommend getting for the best speed: a 250GB (or whatever biggest) size of Raptor Drive 10000RPM (much faster reading speed).

Operating system: Get Windows Vista home Premium, basic is probably the worst thing ever. Home premium is becoming more of a standard now. XP is outdated and it's security holes are incredibly numerous.

Motherboard, go with whatever is nice a reliable, ask the people at your Tech store.

DVD Burner is a must I would say today.
    GOOD LUCK!

I just cannot imagine what I do that are not basic.

I use programs for everything. For playing/making music I use programs, I use dreamweaver and photoshop. I dont use any windows programs at all except Outlook Express.

What does not Vista basic have that I need ?

Microsoft will warn against buying the cheapest one of course :)

Go for Intel Duel Core. It is the best IMO. Though I got Intel D but it works really great. I have heard good things about E6300. Try to get atleast 1GB RAM (DDR II is very cheap right now).

I am going for 2GB RAM. And then the Intel Duel Core. I never had intel before. Always build my comps with AMD. But its three years since the last one now and I am lazy so I will go for a ready build one.

CS3 isnt compatible with vista, neither is my favorite firewall, I downgraded straight back to XP, too many problems with Vista yet.
