I have a huge number of backlinks for various articles and stuff but way less for the homepage. I'm interested if it's still helping my homepage's PR to increase.
Yes of course. Will this mean that my homepage will always be one step behind (first it will take the articles to gain pr and on the next update the homepage) on every update?
In a natural link-profile you should also be building links to your homepage. Once natural links start growing, many will be to your homepage. In the end you should have a nice link-profile with your homepage being the page with most links, but not over roughly 50%. For your link-profile to look natural, you should probably build some links to your homepage. From directories for instance.
Unless DMOZ or Yahoo directories are dead as far as I know. I submited my page to 1k+ directories and only 2 or 3 are showing up somewhere on the 10th page. Google got a little smarter than a page full of links. The links are natural and organic, I never paid for a link. People write about what I write and that's why I have more pointing to diff. articles.
Quality directories, preferably on topic, aren't dead - IMO. The generic directories usually being advertised on DP are probably not useful for SEO purposes much - I do agree on that. But as long as they are free or cheap and not spammy (do check whether the other links in the category are actually relevant), they do help a bit towards SEO. Personally I don't pay for directories, but every once in a while I do submit my site to free directories. Can't hurt.
You must be joking. Stop writing articles because you build deep links. The purpose of my site is not to have links. That's just part of the process. I don't wake up in the morning asking myself where should I try to place my link and instead I'm asking what should I write today to keep my visitors organic and healthy. I don't even build backlinks! Except for that regretable part when I lost a week maybe posting to web dir's.
Ah, you are saying all these links to articles on your site are all natural? You should have clarified that, because on this forum that's not the usual scenario being talked about. In that case it's a lot easier and I'm not sure what your question is about: congratulations! Keep up the good work! Your homepage PR is just about the least important thing to worry about.
