Why Are There So Many Directories?

Some people have hobbies of collecting stamps. This is my hobby.
People spend $$$$ for hobbies, and I spend $$$$ for my hobby. The income is nothing ,compared to the expenses for promotions. But after 1 year if I get half of the money I spend, can't complain for that

 

There are wy too many. And I find it utterly useless.

 

I do it for the hookers and beer!

Just like in the forums' case people think that you just install the script and you get loads of money. Then they realize that a stock looking directory, with only the DMOZ sql dump won't make it that easy. Some remain mediocre, while others actually start working on it

 

If only I had known that was another option

1 - 2 thousand directories. I think you need to put atleast another two 0's on the end of that.

I would think that there are well over 100,000 directories.

There are web hosting directories, article directories, various niche directories, reciprocal link directories, paid submission directories, free to submit directories.

Infact, I think there could even be well over 500,000 of different types of directories.

MSN, Yahoo, Dmoz all have a directory in their site aswell.

Most of them look for backlinks. If the links have PR, it's an added bonus. I doubt if ppl submit it to directories hoping for some traffic.
