How do you keep forums clean? (Free from abusive postings)

I'm developing a website with a forum. How do forums verify their members? How do they ensure no abusive postings are made?

I've noticed a few members on here have been removed - what did they do and how were they discovered?

How big is this forum and how many people work on it?

Is this information available anywhere else on here?

You will have to moderate your forums to make sure these posts get deleted also make sure you have a report the post to moderator links on all posts this we members can make you aware of spam and abusive posts. Also everyday make sure you login and click the view posts since last visit and you can review what has happened and delte posts if necessary.

Most forum softwares have a bad words filter, so if you swear it will come up as **** which will makes things less objectionable until you get online to delete it.

Also you can set boards permissions to disallow new members with less then a certain post count from posting live links. This slows down people signing up just to spam their website's URL.

 

This is one of my favorites. I would never let a guest post. I have seen forums with a LOT of stupid posts by guests.

Anyway, I really think the best way is to get a group of moderators who can actively patrol the forum(s)

By using fair and active moderation... Keep the board moderated, but not over moderated. No one likes posting behind iron curtains and great walls.

Use the bad word filter, always run the latest edition of your forum software, and create special rules for allowing the posting of links and such.

 

Sharing my personal experience, i'll recommend to have an efficient team of moderators. though disallowing guests to post, censoring abusive words etc help alot, but moderators are the crucial need of a forum.

 

Install mods freely available at developer's sites.

Be active at moderation. Ban IPs who post some bad words...

Ban censored words like a$$h0l* etc

 

Make a set of rules and some moderators and see that the rules are followed.

If they are not followed then give an infraction or a warning. After some warnings if the user is not behaving properly, ban him.

If he comes back again and again then block his I.P.

If he uses other techniques then make a I.P. lookup and call the ISP and report him.

 

i have a lot of return spammers on my forum, i think what i am going to do is ban the websites from being posted in the word filter.

 

You need a lot of active members to report the posts and quality, reponsible moderators to help wade through and delete the spam.

 

How does one employ a moderator? what are standard costs? what would you budget in a business plan per operator?

 

Moderators are basically active members of a community that the admin selects to do the job and they voluntarily do the housekeeping.

 

Most work for gratitude.

Though offering special perks like a mod forum where they can rant about member, larger avatars, huge inboxes, maybe an email account...all of these things (perks) are minor compared to the service they can (and do) do.

Big enough to earn enough to pay them. That varies by forum... DP does not pay it's mods, so seemingly it's not big enough
