I just realized that Microsoft's latest OS, Vista, doesn't come with support for an SMTP server. Now what are the developers supposed to use? This is ridiculous. What are my alternatives? Emulators haven't worked for me. Standalone SMTP servers won't work, because clients won't necessarily have them. This is frustrating!
Only around 5 hours worth yesterday. I found almost 10 DLL addons or SMTP emulators/fixes and none worked for Vista. This is really bad. I don't even think I can use email functions anymore. What am I even supposed to do? This is ridiculous...I have one alternative but it will end up wasting a ton of bandwidth for me...probably my only choice... You can actually do it with a DNS lookup and bypass SMTP use, but support for this and documentation is virtually non existent. sigh.
if you didnt know, vista doesnt come with smtp server. Longhorn server or Server 2008 would include smtp. But there are many programs that can get you going, plus vista is not a server Here are few you can try: Free SMTP Server (This is handy, runs as an app and simple to configure for testing your apps). http://softstack.com/freesmtp.html Smartermail - Free for one domain. http://www.smartertools.com/Products/SmarterMail/Free.aspx man, just search, you'll find bunch of stuff. Plus, if you havent tried II7, i would try it out. It has really nice smtp featues built in.
DW1 - I have searched, as I stated in my original post. 1ahosting - I have tried both of these programs. Smartermail imposes limits on users to 10 for the free version, and I am not looking to pay the fee to upgrade each time I get more users. FSS didn't work out for me. I may revisit it. Where is the link to II7?
Somethings about Microsoft SUCK! especially the new geniuine thing its soo annoying!!, I do have a legit copy of XP, BUT even then u have to call to get confirmation its very annoying, it depends on the person tho, I have to format once ina while due to viruses or sometimes just cuz things are too messy and unorganized..
Why don't you Install Linux and Windows and dual boot. If you need a production server just buy a Linux compatible computer.
The problem is, I'm a developer. I would then require that all of my clients have linux and a compatible computer. This is irrational. I need something I can package with my program that enables all Windows users use my program with email support. SMTP doesn't look like it'll be an option.
Yep, the solution is to go back to XP. I've had to do that for a lot of clients due to the lack of compatibility between Vista and tons of peripheral hardware. No Vista drivers for lots of stuff. Pathetic
my vista wont let me run anything in the accessories at the same time as anything else. it wont let me run notepad at the same time as calculator This is a $1699 laptop :O booo vista
