I'm starting to get really annoyed with Google putting wikipedia everywhere in their SERPS. Is there some reason other than on its own merit Google is doing this? It's like the .edu thing where Google swears it doesn't give any extra points to, yet your SERP page is swamped with dead edu links on highly saught keywords. What am I missing?
Wikipedia has powerful linking. They also use nofollow links for external links. So for example. A page, A has thousands of incoming links and that page is a pr9, and as such should rank quite well. Page B, has a few links, but its linked from Page A (wikified pages with linking structures in the text) so it gets quite a lot of rank because its connected to page A, and possibly other well linked pages. So even though its self its not well linked externally it still ranks high. See how the PR is filtering down through the graph of the internal linking now and why wiki seems to rank for everything? Pierce
Wikipedia scores highly because it has high trustrank. Unfortunately, it now hordes all of this trustrank because it uses rel=nofollow on external links. It may be good for wikipedia, but it's bad for the web.
Wikipedia provide a lot of value. However it's really annoying to see Wiki, eBay, YouTube & co always in the first positions They dominate the net.
As a user, I often find that Wikipedia is the most desirable page to answer my queries. I don't begrudge their good ranking.
Mmm So I'm searching for web design or Web marketing and what is the probability that I am searching for the meaning of these terms? Very reduced wouldn't you say? So why is Wiki beating my company for those search terms? Isn't it all about relevancy?
People just need to stop linking to it, or only use nofollow links. Theres no reason to give it the google juice.
Amen to that. My Devil May Cry site used to rank first for one of its primary keyword until all of a sudden a wikipedia page concerning the same subject was erected and I've been stuck underneath it since. *curses*
google and yahoo is changing their algo. according to wikipedia. have tried define:xxxx operator. it's showing wiki results. i hate this but it's true
I've got to agree with previous posts in that it's annoying they are dominating the web. However, business is business and right now they are winning. We need to work around the issue or beat them at their own game. Simple :-D
Exactly! I was searching for bathtubs (not the whats and hows of it) and here's what I got: http://www.google.com/search?q=bathtubs
I really dont like it. Wiki really doesnt deservie the rankings it gets. Why do I say that? More often then not, what they say about a topic is minimal and sometimes incorrect. Google should give more weight to sites dedicated to topic then sites where many topics are discussed.
Wiki is good as it does not allow sponsors or affilates into it I tried to put into www.webhostingtalk.com under webhosting bu they removed it But I am getting traffic from wiki for a co.nr site!
I used to like wiki, when I had school projects to do.... lol Now its irritating that what ever you search their it shows up on the front page.
