Many Backlinks at once will hurt ranking?

I was told that too many backlinks in a short time will actually hurt ranking or PR.

    My questions is:
    1. is it true? Any experiences or references for this?
    2. what numbers are categorized as "too many"? 10, 100, 1000?
    3. what numbers are categorized as "in a short time"? 1 week, 1 month?

Like to hear your opinion on this.

It takes alot in a short amount to get penalized. The number is not an exact known but its thousands in a month.

Also too many links wouldnt hurt your PR, just rankings.

Just build links to your site over time. Do not buy thousands of links or you could run into a problem.

Build your links in time... Don't build in bulk 'coz Google Penalized that kind of action...

As I have read an article that you must build links slowly.... Sad to say I forgot to bookmark the SEO article....

Thank you all for the input.

Recently I just place a site wide text link ad, purely for traffic & sales, they got PR3 in homepage (the same as mine) and the total backlinks are 1000+. Lots of PR0's tho.

Then I exchange link with my friend's blog who is putting my link in sitewide blogroll, another 1000+ backlinks with a lot of PR0.

It all happened in a month. :( Wish I heard that sooner.

I have had pages get 10,000 links in a couple of days. If you look at sites like engadget they can get over 20,000 links to every blog post.

Getting lots of links is the best thing that you can do, just make sure they are not spammy links.

You can NEVER get penalized for too many links in a short period of time. Had that been the case it would leave the door wide open for sabotage.
Want to take down your competitor? simple...just point tons of links to his site....that obviously doesn't work
so get as many links as you can...it won't hurt you

You can get penalized. The amount of links needed is very high but its possible and has happened to numerous of people.

Just ask Nintendo he will give you his personal story.

If you started a brand new site and somebody pointed 50,000 spammy links at it I would bet a lot of money it would never rank in Google.

Just to give you an example of sites not getting hurt by gaining links too fast. Just google "ron paul" site no 1 is a brand new site and the reson its number 1 is because of huge amount of backlinks added in a short span of time

You don't get penalised for LINKS pointing to your site, you get penalized for CONTENT on your site

That basically what Nintendo did for an SEO contest with a PR6 aged domain. It ended up getting banned.

How do you know for sure it was because of links and not due to content on his site?

Not going to argue over this because 98% of us arent capable or stupid enough to do it. But with enough amount of crap links in a short time you can get penalized/banned.

But heres some references on Google Bowling as its named

    http://www.wolf-howl.com/seo/googlebowling-2/
    http://www.threadwatch.org/node/2317
    http://www.shimonsandler.com/?p=122

Now after algo updates really dont know if it still works and most people have stayed clear of even attempting to gain that many links because of what can happen.

Just aim at getting quality links. The best links are one way links back to your site. To many reciprocal links can be a problem so try to balance out the links over time. Getting a few 1000 links within one month will not harm you but a 1000 links each month could be a problem.

The big factor here is google constantly change and keep secret their algorithms, there is no way to know the exact algorithms at any given time.

If they are quality links you have nothing to worry about.
In case of successful Digg you will get a lot of backlinks and I'm sure your rankings won't hurt a bit ;)
