i just reformatted my whole hard drive... and re installed windows xp...

now my computer runs faster than it ever has...

and the last time i installed service pack 2 it immediately started slowing my system down..

do i have to install service pack 2 ???

is it really that risky if i don ?

If you decide not to install Service Pack 2,my advice is to use a good firewall ( like: ZoneAlarm ) and to use Mozilla Firefox for browsing.

The standard Internet Explorer wich comes with the Windows XP is sooo vulnerable.

PS: if you use ZoneAlarm, block the web access to IE for you own good.

you really should be installing sp2. there are many critical security updates it fixes.

Perhaps install it, then disable some of the SP2 specific features if its slowing you down.

Microsoft only supports Service pack 2 now. You won't be getting any more updates.

would be a good idea if you don't want to get hacked however if you do not upgrade to:

    1. use a router
    2. use a really good firewall, better than zonealarm
    3. get a very good anti-virus, preferably a heuristic one like kaspersky anti virus or NOD32

Service Pack 2 for WinXP is a must have nowadays.
I see no reason why you should expose your PC at risk by not installing SP2 and all critical updates after SP2.

SP2 is VERY neccesary and I highly highly do not recommend not installing it. As others have said there are many critical updates and vulnerability issues fixed. It is for your own good, otherwise your machine will not be very secure.

I would recommend installing Service Pack 2, and all the other updates you can find on Windows/Microsoft update.

I hate the slowness just as much as the next guy but the risk/reward would be too great for me to venture down that path!

On the upside if you are infected every 2 months, a fresh install will always run super fast :D

SP2 is a MUST HAVE really i mean why don't you install Windows 98 it will be much faster but it doesn't have much support and many programs don't even run on 98 coz its too old so you should upgrade to SP2 now rather than later...

Service Pack 2 is like an improvement to XP, so I guess it will help if you do install it.
