NO FOLLOW attributes in blogs

NO FOLLOW attributes have been used in blogs to avoid spam. But is there any disadvantage to this? I'm still confused whether or not I should put the same for my own blog especially since it's intended for our affiliate programs.

Is it really a must though I've already set all comments for moderation?

Its actually upto you, If the quantity of comments is manageable, then you can possibly take care of it, but when it slips out of hand, then that nofollow helps a lot..

And perhaps, you wudnt want anyone to come up and get a live link without even giving a nice read a single line.. lol I avoid such lazy bums.. ;)

I get your point LKS. I needed that to completely convince me about putting this no follow tags. Now, I'm wondering if there are any mishaps or disadvantage to this tag?

Well No Mishaps and Dis-advnatages as such, Infact its made for the sole beefit of webmaster who have lots and lost of blogs to take care of.. No Disadvantage though.. just for the fact if thats implemented in a wrong way then it might cause certain problems like improper crawling of pages are connected through links with nofollow attribute.. And that inludes Internal pages as well..

Nothing more then that... Its safe :)

What makes you think that? Google doesn't take Nofollow literally. Google will crawl a nofollow link just like a regular link. Nofollow is a way for a webmaster to tell Google that they are "unsure" about the link, and that Google should decide whether it is quality or not.

    Affearner:

I think you should implement them for comments. Nofollow does dilute PR distribution, therefore your regular links would have more PR passed to them.

Well it has been observed, that under certain conditions, google might not even crawl the no-follow links (mind u, I mean certain conditions not always) Although its pretty much possible and is proven that a new site can get cralwed via a single nofollow link, yet sometimes when the links are way deep, then it causes problems.. thats y I mentioned

Conditions might vary from being a deep link to a numerous links on a page with the same tag..

    >>>>then it might cause certain problems<<< .. Just wrote what has been observed.. and its both ways.. thats why shared with you all..

You can confirm it though, in case you want to, by testing that on multiple sites..

Anyhow, to your post, generally without any doubts I agree, as nofollows still get crawled, but sometimes they dont..

And yes they are most often used with comments on blogs, forums, and paid advertisements these days since google has thrown the axe on them..

    Regards
    LKS

Aha! Is that so David? If it's a no follow link and it still gets crawled, will it still get backlinks or additional PR?

I have rel=nofollow backlinks that show up on link:mysite in Google. As I stated earlier, it is up to Google to decide whether it will count or not, whether it is a quality site, etc. rel=nofollow means you the webmaster are telling Google to make it's own decision. Not using rel=nofollow means you are telling Google that it is a quality link.

rel=nofollow does dilute the PR that is passed, possibly not passing any at all. Thats why I recommended you use it. It will stop PR from bleeding out via your user comments, and concentrate it to the links you care about.

Thanks David. Now it's all clear to me :)

One last question -- if you're commenting on blogs that have this no follow attribute, will you as the commenter still get any backlink or some drop of PR?

If you link your site in a comment that gets rel=nofollow assigned to it, it is still possible to get credit as a backlink. It's up to Google to decide. I believe it is theoretically possible to get a diluted amount of PR, but that is controversial.

The fact is that no-follow does NOT reduce comment spam on blogs. Not even a bit.

The only way to do that is to use moderation and filtering. If you use WordPress, activate the Akismet plug-in. It catches 90% and I moderate out the rest,
