Was it google? I remember askjeeves.com was working like search engine, was it ? if not how it was working ?
Well, as PHP was the first programming language to suit online needs and to interact with HTML, and it came in 1994, I guess Yahoo and Google are both the oldest (as they date back to 1994), but I'm not sure.
It depends what do you mean by 'search engine' but Altavista claims, their have had first worldwide index of webpages ('95) http://www.altavista.com/about/
Yes, Aliweb is the oldest. Lycos was the first in widespread usage. Google came long after them, in 1998. Yahoo was not a search engine until 2004. AltaVista was the "best" search engine until Google came around, so their claim above is probably true.
It looks like the first "search engine" was Archie created in 1990 by Alan Emtage. Source: isrl.uiuc.edu/~chip/projects/timeline/1990archie.htm -- Not sure how reliable of a source this is... -- Nathan Enns
Yeah... I didn't think his question specified "web" search engine. Sorry if I misunderstood. If we are talking about just web search engines, wouldn't it be Wandex? Although it seems Aliweb was released shortly after Wandex, if not at the same time. mkgray.com:8000/blog/Personal/Full-Circle-to-Google.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engines -- Nathan Enns
yeah well he's wrong Google are one of the newest search engines. Yahoo were around way before google.
