I have a template coded for my directory running on indexscript, now i was thinking of releasing it under my sponsorship for PHPld.

Would i be diluting my directory's brand but releasing the original template for use on other directories?

Or is it a good strategy to increase your brand visibility ?

Would love to hear yout thoughts

It is always good to increase your brand visibility :)

But you must assess the commercial impact on both the scripts before you proceed down that track
    imho

I'd say release templates for the public but keep your unique one yours. Imagine if someone visits a few of your templated sites first; gets to yours (The real deal) and assume it's just a free template you downloaded.

I'd keep yours and the ones you distribute seperate. If you paid for a unique template your site should be the ONLY one on the net with it. My $0.02 :D

If I were you I would keep it so I would be totally original. Sure there are some important brands out there but they've all started like you.

    Yup, definitely do that.
But, don't just change colors. Try to distinguish it a bit more, if possible.

BTW that's a nice directory. Just submitted a link :)

same here, keep your design unique. You can change colors but try also to change some modules here and there before releasing the free templates.

IMHO, That's the best thing to do to get the most out of the template. Make some slight tweaks to the template and release that one as free.
