To be fair, i am prob one of the few from my region hanging around here. With that being said, most my friends have ABSOLUTELY no idea what internet directories are and how they work. Oh, sure, they know about Yahoo! directory, but that's as far as it goes. Mind you, they are highly educated ppl like lawyers and professionals. So perhaps I can throw this question to you too. Do the people around you generally know abt directories and what they do? Or are they like my friends, ignorant and cannot be bothered? I suspect the answers will be highly polarized based on where you are from. But let's see
You are lucky that few of your friends knew about Yahoo! directory But in my region down south ,they knew only Google! and every time if some body asks what I am doing I have to explain to them from the begining by starting with what is meant by directories then Telephone directories -> then Web directories I have a hard time explaining to them!
Same here , none of my mates know what is a Web Directory When i explain them stuff, they say if people pay you for inclusion why dont the peopl who pay start there own, then i say that i have PR good rankings and there being listed here is good for there SEO and they would end up saying they never came across any directory when searching in GOOGLE!!! and i would end up saying they are for a specific categories and if your search within those categories u for sure will end up in directories and thats too much for them and they say its boring hectic work!!! lolz and i have to turn my face towards my pc and start working again
no one in my area 2!In fact we are doing jokes about links to girls(ex:i will put to you so many links that you will be in first page but no one seems to understand)
Not only directories. There was a survey last year that showed only 20% of the people know what a blog is. I think directories would be more like 2%. I tried to get friends to help and make some money themselves, but they all say "no, that will never work. there are already so many websites"
Nobody that i know offline knows anything of a web directory, for a couple of reasons ive had to explain my involvement with my directories to a couple of people and although ive repeated a few times they still dont know fully what im talking about. Now if i mention google, yahoo, msn, ebay their like oh yeah, bla bla bla.... About a year ago i replied to a text message from a female who isn't a regular internet user, i said i was blogging at the time and she's never replied to me since. She maybe thinks blogging is something else, lol
You are right Freewebspace, to her i am a blogging pervert. She maybe confused it with "Dogging" British slang for a type of public sex activity
People around me know what a directory is, but most of them don't know what directories are about. They know that they can search a directory's categories to find a group of sites they want but they don't know what directories and directory listings offer to other sites. And most of my friends like me have a university degree on computers and telecommunications. They use the internet all the time but they never had a kind of work with PR, and backlinks. Of course I don't have problems explaining how things work. They catch it easily.
wow, i'm pleasantly surprised that so many of you are in my shoes! its hard explaining what directories do and my friends give me this strange look like: 'You mean you can actually make money like that?' sigh.....
Sometimes when I go to school- and feel sleepy my friends/colleagues ask me if I slept during the night and what was I doing? When I tell them --they just cracks jokes on me --and make fun. good news is --today the Vice-principal called me and asked what I do on Internet So I explained to him and he said he is interested as he wants his son who is stduying 4years computer Science Engg. --to understand what I do So they will be visiting me anytime--in the next few days.
Actually, there's probably a lot to be gained for directory owners from explaining directories to the general public. Most people use search engines simply because that is what they've heard of, and they won't be aware that you can sometimes get better results (and a lot less spam) by using a well-run directory. You can search for "apple" and choose between the food and computers categories, for instance, whereas a search engine will just mix those results together.
