They may have skills but they are not serious, they will let you down to go to a party.. that happened to me before.

I'd have to say no. I mean, I understand where you're coming from, being 17 myself, but I just don't see many intelligent teenagers nowadays.

There are a few that I know are aove average, and it's possible you are one of them, but it's hard to take the 3% seriously when the other 97% aren't.

Where do you live Vadym!! lol.
Some of the most intelligent and creative people are teenagers.

Maybe its because I hate labels. Just because someone is 16, 17 or 18 does not mean they are immature and irresponsible. Thats just a massive sweeping generalisation.
    I hate stereotypes :).

Im 16 (17 in couple of months) from brighton, UK.. I am in first year of doing AS levels. I have ran many websites and projects.. made thousands of pounds on the internet, have hundreds of ideas for projects.. just a case of no serious investors (10k+) to fund and help me out.. most of my projects are 2 man job min.

I have extensive skills in website & business managment, marketing, finance.. have done a lot of professional web design for various companies as well.. and I've also learn html and a bit of php..

Im just like any other student though.. play for school footie team, go out every friday, saturday night.. never revise for exams etc (school just teaches you how to work for someone else IMO). So when businesses check me out they can't take me seriously cos they were expecting some fat nerdy kid with extensive achney lol..

HOWEVER. I was talking to a lot of universities that do entrepreneurship and e-commerce based in the UK. They all said even if I get awful A levels i.e. Ds Es.. they would still take me in because of my experience.

But yeh most businesses on first impression don't take us seriously because of our age.. and the fact that they were newbies at our age.. when a lot of us are already professionals with 3+ years experience..

Online, age does not matter, but outside in the internet its really hard to take a 15 year old seriously.

People shouldn't care much about age while on the internet. I'm just 13 and can easily do some nice coding in many languages.

I live in Vancouver, so it's easy to see my point of view. Guess anyone that's an active member on DP can be taken as a seriously bright teenager.

If you got taken seriously I'd be jealous.

Like it or not, a majority of employers look down on as if we aren't capable of doing the job, even though we can do it just as well if not better than our 'older competitors' for a job.

Funny how I can run my own profitable business, yet most employers seem to think I won't be able to flip burgers do any other small task just because I am 17!

EDIT: This is with a good resume by the way... all A's and B's at school, numerous academic achievements, references in high places...

if you want to impress people, your words don't impress it's your work. Make a portfolio and it doesn't matter what age you are because you have proven you have done work. I don't give anyone a second look without a portfolio and I couldn't care less about testimonials)

or if you want to get really sneaky, buy a few domain names throw up a few designs and make some fake testimonials...but I didn't tell you that ;)

btw - I have never faked a testimonial

At the age of 16 you inevitably don't have much experience, and that's what will teach you all the things you didn't know that you still need to learn. And time will give you the opportunity to build up a reputation and a set of work references that employers like to see.

The only thing you can do at this stage is work on an impressive portfolio. Because that's the only thing that will balance out your age and lack of experience, and force people to take you seriously.

the fact is that no matter how old you are you stand a better chance of getting a job when you are educated to degree level or above.

i have been turned down for interviews which i could have stormed because i have no formal qualifications.

fact is why is someone gonna pay you £40,000 a year to do a job based on you saying you can do it. especially when joe bloggs with his 3 a levels and degree are willing to do it for the same money.

now it may work out that you know a lot more than the other guy but he will get the job trust me.

i am looking at starting a degree now for the sole purpose of having something to write on my cv other than a few gcse's 2 crap a levels and a nvq

get your qualifications now and it puts you in good stead for the future.

and dont expect to get the high paying job justr because you know you can do it. because that isnt enough for most employers.

Mostly, teenagers are always considered as "no,no" to companies who are looking for bright and serious people.

But in my opinion, teenagers are active, ready to learn and ready to show their true skills if given them a chance.I would approach a teenager to act as a contributer, with an open mind.

that's a good point though, the younger you are, if you can present your work in the best possible professional light, that would only help your case.

It's just difficult when you are young b/c your 'track record' is so short.

I take teenagers with skills very seriously. I wished I had the internet when I was a teenager. I have been more impressed with people under 20 than anyone when it comes to design work, understanding seo and the ability to learn.
