I was just wondering how much it costs a registrar such as godaddy or enom to register a name. Is it just $0.25 or is it much more?
Registrars pay Verisign $6.00 for each .com and $3.50 for each .net - and also pay $0.22 to ICANN. Starting October 15 2007 VeriSign will charge $6.42 for .com domains and $3.85 for .net domains.
You can own an affiliate registrar for pretty cheap. It's not some big mystery anymore. I have one just for "Shi*ts and Giggles". It's pretty cool telling your clients: "Just go to my registrar and open an account." The Steady money comes with renewals and other services, and it also can lead into other work, Development, SEO, and such. I highly recommend it
Just to clarify, $0.25 is the fee that ICANN used to charge, so that is an expense to a registrar and not revenue.
No. It's under Domain Filer. (Which is company property, I have one under the same account, but not online yet) Extensions are assigned or designated to the country they represent, and there after, registrars have the right to sell registrations. No body truly owns a domain (ccTLD's), you merely have paid for the rights to it's usage, and have to follow the guidelines set by the country that it has been assigned to. And yes the ICANN fee is charged to the registrar per domain registered. It's like here in Vegas, bars have to pay 3% of their gaming rev to The Gaming Commission.
For .info for the first year fees to be paid to the registrar are very low , about $0.25 or less . For .biz also I think fees are low, less than $6, because some registrars offer registrations at a low rate.
Registrars pay $6.00 to the Afilias registry (afilias.info) for .info domains, increasing to $6.15 on October 15 2007.
They pay $6 plus ICANN fee of $0.22, so they don't make much on those sales. That's why they try & sell you other stuff like webhosting
