How effective is advertising in forum sigs?

I do have about 3-4 forums that I frequent on a regular basis, but I am wondering if it is wise to invest time to join many (hundreds) of forums related to my site, put my link in my sig, and just type a few good posts. I know the whole quality over quantity thing applies here, but I haven't been getting too many responses to the 3-4 forums I currently frequent.

If anything, this would help page rank, correct?

Forums are great for traffic if you have a niche and you post in that niche. For example post in a gardening forum if you have a gardening site and so forth. When I started 70% of my traffic used to come from forums. Now I get organic still 20% still comes from the same forums and I always look for new ones no matter if they are not busy. Supposed to be good for backlink building also.

Youd be better off spending your time submitting to directories than forums to increase pr as a sig link isnt valued that much in terms of increasing pr. Where it gains its value is because it drives traffic to the sites listed.

I've been doing forum signatures for a while. It definitely brings in traffic, and I've gotten some sign-ups every now and then from posting in forums.

True, it doesn't give much PR if that's what you're looking for. But a link is a link, and a lot of them over time can be helpful.

So I say join as many forums as you want. But make sure you don't spam them, and make sure the forums you join are actually lively.

Yea, I'll actually contribute, but, for the most part, it will be
    1) Sign up
    2) Insert link into sig
    3) make 5-10 good posts
    4) never go back.

If you don't intend to go back to that forum, it won't help much in driving traffic to your site. You can make 10 - 15 posts in each forum, and those threads will get indexed, with your posts, and they will be counted in backlinks for your site but not more. If you want regular traffic from these forum sig links, then I'd suggest you choose the top 5 forums from amongst them (the ones which have more users, more post count etc) and actively partcipate in those only.

In my humble opinion, 5-10 posts per forum isn't going to get you anywhere. You can't expect the other forum members to have much trust in you after only 5-10 posts. Maybe some curious ones will visit the link to your site in your sig, but you won't exactly have a good reputation on the board if you don't contribute regularly.

Really with forum posting you have to keep contributing to the community, helping others, giving advice, answering questions, etc. As time goes on you will be seen as a trustworthy person, and forum goers will be more inclined to check out the links in your signature file.

At least, this is my view on it.

It is absolutely correct. Forum signature might turn into a very successful step if you post your link in niche forums. And try to be very active in these forums so that your signature would attract the attention of the other users.

When you start a website, you just have to do whatever it takes, and forum signatures are one of those things. The best thing to have is organic traffic, but anyway, brand awareness is an other thing to care about.

In forums, you meet people. Somebody seeing your site will tell somebody else abut your site. You don't want to ignore any of those people interested in your service/website.

So, IMO, always keep a constant participation in forums, just don't do it all day long, always save time for other things, site development, marketing the site in other ways, etc.

Depends on the forum. You also need to post regularly and post something interesting to catch the eye of other posters on the forum.

If you manage to be the author of a sticky thread, nothing like it :D

Just stick to several forums. 500 posts across 5 boards is MUCH better than 5 posts across 500 boards.

This can cause a problem. Many forums have strict policies and can ban your user if they find you have started similar threads on other forums. So I don't think you should start same topics in different forums.

I wouldn't advice you to join hundreds of forums. Select the best forums in your niche, which allow forum sigs. The more relevant your sigs are to the forum, the better conversion you'll notice.

Some of my forum sigs (not DP ones) earn me close to $100/month. Not much but it's worth it. I go there, have fun, advice people, solve my probs, make friends, all this + $100/month, great isn't it :D

Forums, a perfect place to get solved every queries and confusions. If you have a niche and you join in some niche forums. Then definitely your signature may fetch some targeted visitors to your websites. Your site would get more traffic, if you have a strong knowledge on the subject. I already said that people join in the forums for getting solved their queries and confusions. If you reply there perfectly then users tend to click your signatures for more information. Btw, joining every forum is not a better idea. You have to check whether that forum is still active or not. Do member still join in for information?
