I think his point is that the statement 'the richest country in the world' is meaningless and allows people to ignore the real problems that face millions of americans. The US has the same problems as every other nation, and some that are unique to the US. Its a shame these issues aren't exciting enough to be of a concern to the rest of the US. Terrorists and child killers are alot more exciting
You presuppose that it is everyone's job to ensure poor people are given money. If you are concerned that people are poor/homeless, no one stops you from buying them an apt or home, getting them a job, or feeding them. Are you doing that? If not, why not? Caring about these "real problems" doesn't do anything. Go out and help someone, if you want. That's good advice, right?
