Linking old site to new site - is it ok?

I have set up a new site - because my old one is getting nowhere with Google. Problem is I need to let all my visitors know about my new site. So my old site will have a link to the new one.

Additionally I will be putting the new site on my Google Analytics account and Google Sitemaps.

Will connecting the two sites together in this manner cause any problems with google?

Especially if the content is related but not the same.

This is definitely the wrong reason to make a new site. Why dont you change your old site so it will go somewhere in Google. What on earth makes you think that your new site will make it in Google when the old one did not ???

 

Why do you think a new site is going to rank better than the old one? I think you are better off working on the old site to improve it rather than starting a new site.

 

The old site worked fine in Google when I used TextPattern. It was a PR4 site that ranked well. I then changed over to WordPress, and all the categories and archive links got me penalised for duplicate content. Causing my PR to drop to 0.

Then I discovered I had a bad Wordpress theme that caused all my stuff to go Supplemental.

I am just not convinced that updating my old site to make it more Google friendly is actually going to work for me. Google used to crawl my site every 30mins. Now it has stopped coming.

Easier to just start a new site - and have a clean slate. At least I am hoping the slate will be clean. (Interestingly the new domain is PR2. I have held the domain name for a few years but it has never been attached to a website - so no idea how that worked out).

 

Unless the both sites ( new and old ) dont share the same content, you can place links from the old one to the new one. Make sure you dont use the same content on both sites.

 

No, this is just not the right way to look at it.
Use the old site, throw away that wordpress stuff and build it again. Good thing with this is that you have an "aged" domain, you will keep the incoming links, you will keep the domain name (there must be a reason that you picked it ?)
If you have a penalty from Google now they will remove that penalty when you fix the site.

 

It will bring some traffic to your new site and your new site might get indexed faster that way.

Its not easy to say, how long time did it take going from good to bad ?
You said your site was going from PR4 to PR0, you must have lost a lot of links.

 

I don't think I lost many links. I know I certainly gained a load of links. Though I may have lost a few links from one PR6 site.

It took about 1 month from my site to go from good to bad.

 

Just use the 301 permanent redirect , google and other SE will understand this
but if you change domain name , then you better not already have a high pagerank cause it wont be the same on the new domain , also a 301 helps here and google will transfer some PR to the new domain but never kill a working conecpt , in this cause the site isnt ranking high at all so the PR will be more to nothing
