I am wondering what are the most cost effective ways to get submissions to a directory? I am not talking about ways to increase your pagerank, although that would be nice too, but HOW DO YOU LET PEOPLE KNOW...HEY MY DIRECTORY IS HERE! I would appreciate any comments anyone has.
Actually a directory is probably the best type of site to list in a directory. That is because most of the people who visit directories are webmasters and many of them will be looking for places to submit their own websites. So, if your directory is listed prominently in the appropriate categories of popular directories you will get more submissions.
How do you afford top positions in other directories, when running a free directory? Many times my listing is buried somewhere, no offense to anyone, that is just what happens when there are 1000+ listings in 1 category.
I guess nothings comes FREE and CHEAP. So one must have good capital/financial preparations before jumping seriously into the bandwagon. GIVE some --TAKE some.
same way businesses have been making money for centuries....trial and error, it can be painful and expensive but you really have to try out as many different things as possible. One trick to use is do a backlink search of other popular directories within your niche or level (similar page rank and design/appeal) and see where their links are. A recent example of trial and error for me is the purchase of a one month ad on a popular site for $49, I saw other directories advertising there (in a lower-cost part of the page) so far I think I got around 9 clicks, so I learned that site is not a good advertising option for me. Bottom line is you want to get your directory name out infront of as many potential submitters as possible. best bang for the buck comes with analysing before u spend. Don't spend blindly and make sure every link and banner that you buy is a good one that produces your desired results.
It gets worse! But then I say 'HEY, HERE IS MY PR6 WEB DIRECTORY HERE!' and 'HERE IS MY OTHER PR6 LINK DIRECTORY HERE' Works 2wice as nice and even better for me

Keep spamming and thread hijacking with your dir links (don't tell me if you get infractions ) is good way to attract people, apart from the dp signatures here help a lot so do avatars.
