I'm not sure if this is the right category, but since the topic is about facebook and their terms and privacy policy, I tought this would be the best fitted categori. First of all, you should view this flash movie: http://www.albumoftheday.com/facebook/ Lately there have been poping up news about facebook owning everything you tell them (and more). You give them full right to use the information you give them, for whatever they want (they can sell your contact information to spammers and you images to commercials). When you think if it, it's kind of scary. Personally, I don't worry. But I've been discussing alot of my friends, some of them who just left facebook because of these privacy issues, and they keep arguing that facebook WILL sooner or later sell all your information. I respond that I don't think they will, because they would loose everything then. Now I want to discuss a few things with you people on DP.. What do you think about FB's terms and policy? Do you think they would sell your information?
It is not an uncommon policy, obviously the majority of people simply dont read the T&Cs that they check the box to say they agree to. I would imagine it is unlikely they will sell personal details as this would cause bad press even if their T&Cs allow for it but certainly will use the demographics of its users for marketing purposes/ ad sales etc
Facebook and Privacy should NOT be used in the same setence they are polar opposites. I signed up with an alias of sorts even though people insist on using my real name. basically just dont' fill in everything but your sin # which they ask and use it as a way to communicate / joke around. Anything serious ask for contacts and go outside of facebook. One thing though: they track your intersts by the groups you search so a) watch out or b) open a dummy account for that. Facebook is cool but creeply! Facebook is the trojan horse of info gathering. You assume tha tsince you are with "FRIENDS" you can "be yourself" and say whateve ryou want. They can collect info from that site that you would never tell anyone who just called. It's a trojan horse of safety.
But yeah, if it's in the Terms & Conditions that nobody reads, by clicking I agree, you, well, agree.
Personally, thats marketing and business. Facebook collects the information, mainly about what users like, do, etc, but what business doesn't? All the major businesses in the world collect information about customers or potential customers to see who is using their products or to practice target marketing. Plus, if you didn't want people to know what books, movies, your activities, don't post them online in the first place.
