My satellite DSL is down because of a recent storm. (Clouds and satellite signals don't mix) I was about to test my network out again, as some of the clouds parted. When I was about to connect to it, I saw another connection come on my screen. It seems the elderly woman down the street has a D-Link router without an administrator password set. Should I change the security on the network for her, and possible get my laptop kicked off the network during times of storms and clouds- or should I keep it a secret and possibly get her router reconfigured by some random kid? Decisions, decisions. I'm on her network as we speak
Better to talk with her. Eventually, you could end up with a friendly permission to use if and when you are in need (i.e., your usual connection don't work). Bye!
Talk to her yourself. And as the poster above said, you could end up getting her permission, and maybe her cute grand daughter (that is if she has one )
I'm also having some trouble with WiFi when rain is heavy. I don't know if some of you guys also experience this.
HA. I fixed it. Just needed to reboot my router. Try it, fej. Maybe you have to reboot your router after every storm?
what if you don't know where the connection is coming from? I have 3 secured and 1 secured connections in range of my house...depending on which room I'm in I need a wifi booster to See the unsecured network though. I only used it for a day or two while waiting for the stupid phone company to get with the program (VERY long story)
I know where the connection is coming from because it says MARIEOLIVER for the computer name, which of course I know is the old lady down the street. I see a nice secured connection I'd love to connect to. But my internet is back up, so no worries.
If you are in need of a way to improve your signal quality, take a look at the WokFi approach! Check this site for some practical info, examples & guidance: http://www.exe64.com/mirror/wokfi/ (fast european mirror of: http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/)
Haha. Thanks for the advice. Or I could just drive down the street and setup shop on her front porch!
It is illegal to use another's network in the UK without proper permission. Some guy got a suspended sentance a week or so ago for doing so. It was all over the news, it was the first of its kind here. I'm sure there is a similar law in the US. Moral: Don't use someone else's WiFi (or internet) connection. Period. Without asking permission
I have the same situation with my neighbors and when i went to speak to them they did not really care. So i use it myself now and then.
Interesting UK laws. Currently, it isn't illegal in the US, although it depends on what you do with it really. Just war driving around isn't illegal. Long term stealing of internet instead of paying for it for home use probably is, however
It is illegal, I am sure of it. Infact, here's a news story on one such instance: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/06/01/man_punished_for_usi.html
that has to be a very rare case and all considering how he got caught! my laptop is too big...I couldn't have it on my lap in the car! he needs to move to a better city . There is a new shopping center near me that offer up to like 4 wifi spots...and I'm pretty sure no one will think you are stalking an attractive hair dresser
UPDATE: Looks like she solved it herself. After taking up some of her bandwidth, I think she noticed. I can't see the network anymore so she is much more tech savvy than I thought! Either that, or she has some kind of intrusion detection that most people have these days
or maybe her grand daughter is more tech savvy than you thought... it could be that she has turned the ESSID broadcast off...anyways just run netstumbler and see if it shows..if it doesnt...prolly she removed the wireless router itself and is using a wired one ;-P btw wifi boosters..boost your signals a lot..like 500Mw etc etc..they are realy awesome..i am currently working with them ;-)
Nah, I don't want to stalk her. Are some wifi connections automatically named "Unnamed network"? I can't connect to the network that is named this. I was wondering if it was an actual network or something else?
