Tricking Google?

Let's say that you created reciprocal links to everyone on the internet, relevant or not, then told your robots.txt to not let the links page be indexed. Would all links linking to your site appear one-way?

I figured as much, but how does a search engine know? Does it look for links, but then not index the page?

Have you seen the Google empire?
Have you been around long enough to remember when they started?
Do you know the amount of people working at the Google Plex?
Have you seen their reported revenue?

To answer your question, I think it's an old school switch board:) With the big metal plugs, and vacuums.

It's possible to trick google, but they find out about it soon enough, kick your ass for trying and then fix the problem. Using this sort of strategy is risky...but entirely up to you. Your idea is an old one. New ones might work, but again, only for a short time. Ask yourself what'll happen first: you becoming rich as a result of tricking google, or google figuring your methods out?

Why do you think I asked in a forum? I'm not stupid enough to try this live on any of my sites, I was curious of the theory behind the reason. Yes, I was around when google started, and I'm well aware of the size of their empire.

I was wanting to know how google prevented this from happening. Do it's bots effectively ignore the robots.txt?

I think the same as jl255, you would be screwing the people you link with more than you would be screwing Google. I am not sure Google would care that much, but you would have some pissed off webmaster. This would be a great way to ruin your sites rep and yours. All anyone would have to do is check to see if you were indexed.

To save yourself the headache and make Google happy with you just add a bunch of no follows and hope for really stupid webmasters.

Sounds like it's one sure fire way of getting your site sandboxed to me as Google are sure to find out about the pages eventually - robots.txt or not.

I once tried to stop Googlebot from looking inside one of my sites folders and still found pages from the folder in search results.

Yes all the links would count as one way but if people find you doing it you won't be very popular.

I wonder how many people will have second thoughts now when or if you ever decide to sell any text links? In fact this could have the potential of causing DP Members not to trust your integrity in any business dealing.
