Downgrading featured listings to regular.

You had your directory for some time now, its getting bigger and bigger, consumes more bandwidth and resources than it did before... and you probably start feeling like you should raise pricing.

What if you don't have any more featured spots to offer for some popular categories anymore? is it ok in your opinion to downgrade featured listings to regular and raise the price for a featured link?

    Your thoughts please.

If you mean to make an already featured link a regular, thats been paid for and everything, i personally wouldn't do that on my directories.

I hope im not misunderstanding the question.

to do anything else would be unfair totally
unless you state the featured is on a term basis then it stays

I feel that featured links should remain featured forever, if that is what was offered when the link was submitted.

In my directories, Featured Listings expire after 1 year and are downgraded to a permanent listing.

I think there is no other better way to do it. You can't break a contract just to open up new spots. If they bought it for a year, then its up for a year. Permanent = Permanent.

    Hello...

I understand were your coming from but as someone mentioned above
they have already payed for that and i dont believe that would be right

Why NOT just make a secondary catagory? Web Directories 2 or whatever
rather then going threw the effort of possible complications?

    just my 2 cents

    thx

i wouldnt give permanent featured or any type of sponsored listing for life
as much as u may need the money at the beginning of your directorys development, itll be a rope around your neck later on

I only offer 1 year featured in my dir. Regulars are perm however. If you sold them as perm featured then it would not be cool to downgrade them. You could raise your prices and add a "sponsored" listing that would go over featured but I would prefer seeing sponsored listings on the side of the page.

    Just my 2 pennies...

Thats exactly what I mean. But what if you sold a featured link for $10 two years ago when your directory's Alexa was 500,000. Now your Alexa is 5,000 and your $10 featured listings prevent your revenue from increasing.

perhaps add more categories, and split the featured links into more relevant categories? how does that sound?

aspidov, I think you are looking for someone to say its ok to downgrade. But I believe the consensus is that if you sold them as perm featured they should stay as such.

Although i dont agree with a featured being downgraded, you are making a good point, and its something that maybe many of us are going to be faced with in the future.

By that i dont mean the temptation to undo featured listings, but the problem of our directories growing and running out of relevant sales spots, it can be argued that a directory owner must have a good plan from the beginning, but of course its impossible to know how everything is going to happen with a directory in the future.

aspidov i feel is currently up against something that many more owners could face.

if someone paid to be featured - you either need to leave them as such or email them and ask.

why not just make more categories?

I must warn you about that, if you know exactly how googles pr algo. works than you can comment something like that, do not trust google with PR.
