For example, most of the high ranked sites have a title "sponsors" above paid links. Clear enough that "sponsors" must be paying :D

I have an idea. Let's all delete every single site we've ever put up. A search engine with no results to return would certainly tank. I'm in if you could actually give me a convincing argument to boycott google other than this "paid links" thing.

I also have a couple suggestions for google that may stop people from buying and selling links for the sole purpose of pagerank flow:

    1. Keep PR private! Get rid of the damn toolbar and live lookups.
    2. Get rid of PR all together.

It doesn't force you to do anything. Adsense doesn't pass page rank, so why the hell should the advertising on your site be able to do that?

Your site isn't going to disappear from other search engines if you don't follow Google's rules. It is YOUR choice whether to be included in Google or not.

As far as your "clients", many people buy javascript advertising from many sites around the web. Selling links that pass page rank is not about advertising, it's about influencing SERPs. That's why link sellers tell you the PR of the link they are selling. If it was JUST for advertising, then PR wouldn't be mentioned and the link would be nofollow.

Google can and will devalue a percentage of paid links, but they can't find them all. Their announcement is great propaganda for making people think twice about buying/selling links in the first place.

It's bad news for paid directories, but there's way too many of those anyways.

The most important point that needs to be pounded in some peoples heads, because they don't want to admit it:

ADVERTISING IS NOT THE SAME AS SELLING PAGE RANK.

The most important thing to realize is that Google is trying to make the internet unnatural.

Forcing us to put a nofollow to our links? NOPE, Sorry can't do that. NOPE. Why? 'Cause we SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. The standard way of linking to someone is through a href... we don't need to put a nofollow just so your algorithm will work.. Sorry no way.. Why? BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE TO.

People buy links for advertising. I do not care if it's .0001% of the people. People do buy it for advertising, and don't care for the serps benefit. Just because it will screw ur algorithm up when some ppl buy it for pagerank doesn't mean all of us should put a nofollow to tell you which ones are for pagerank.

You make some good points, but I have a couple of responses:

    1) Google built a system based (at least in part) on PageRank. That people are "selling" PageRank is no surprise. Webmasters build their sites based on the system that Google built. Taking away paid links seriously hurts the little guy just starting out, which is antithetical to Google's stated goal of provided relevant search results that don't hurt the small website operators.

    2) Purchasing links has a variety of uses: PageRank, advertisement, anchor text to increase SERPs, increase traffic, etc. It also provides advertising revenue for websites with little other way of making money or monetizing their site. Removing paid links from the algorithm hurts these sites. Again, this is against Google's stated goal of leveling the playing field for the little guys.

    3) ADVERTISING IS NOT THE SAME AS SELLING PAGE RANK.

Wrong: advertising is getting customers to your website and selling products, services, etc. Buying links help increase SERPs, driving more traffic to your website.

Google made PR such a huge thing for the SERPs that buying links is the same thing as buying advertising. Google put the system in place, but now doesn't want us to use the system?

    4) Google makes it's money selling advertising using their own business model, and expect everyone to follow their business model. You're right that we have to follow Google's rules, but when the rules directly conflict with Google's stated goals (see above), there are few webmasters who are going to play by those asinine rules, especially when it hurts them so badly to do so. This is a ploy to suck more advertising dollars out of small businesses by not allowing them to purchase advertising anywhere else. Once again, this goes against everything Google supposedly stands for.

Bottom line is Google built the system that we all have to use, now they expect us to kill our own businesses for the benefit of their own.

You got it backwards ... paid links don't help the little guy. How is the little guy gonna be able to afford more links than the big guy who has much more money to spend on them?

Lol you can buy advertising for traffic, but you shouldn't be able to buy your way to the top of the SERPs. I use Google for search and I don't want to have to weed through sites that just bought their way to the frontpage. I want relevant results that answer my query even if that result is someone's small page.

We don't HAVE to follow Google's rules at all. People can choose to reject Google traffic. It's not easy, but there can be a lot of success without Google.

I'm definitely a fan of Google privatizing PR. It would be great to have no more threads about people seeing PR changes. Link sellers would like that very much.

it doesn't make the serps better, it just makes sure that sites like wikipedia and retailers like amazon.com and ebay dominate for everything since those are the companies with the most and the oldest natural links. i am not going to rat out paid links and besides, they won't even do anything about it if the big companies are the offenders. all you're doing is screwing some small business out of an honest living. that's not to say that google owes anyone a living because they don't but if they don't want their search manipulated in any way, they can figure it out their damn selves with the people they pay, not call on thousands of volunteers. if you do this you are google's b*itch and you ain't never gettin' paid in any way shape or form. that means you will not find yourself ranking better at the end of all this.

fair play is work on your own site and don't snitch on the serps. there are more more harmful things happening on the internet to blow the whistle on.

Google isn't against advertising. Go ahead and buy traffic from advertising. No objection whatsoever from Google. Just don't expect it to pass PR.

    Yeah. That'll work.

Right. Boycott Google! (except the part that pays me)

On the contrary, The buying and selling of links for PR is what's trying to do that. That's precisely why Google has always aimed to discount such schemes. Nothing new here, people.

You don't have to put nofollow anywhere at all. You don't have to do anything. Advertisinbg is fine with Google. PR buying and selling is not fine.

Finally, someone who gets it. Thank you.

It hurts the people selling those links more. I've nevr bought a link. Ever. Those who think that's the only way to promote a site in Google just don't know what they're doing.

True. And Google has nothing against you selling or buying links for advertising, aka traffic. Just don't think they're going to let you buy and sell PR.

No. You're wrong. Advertising is about branding and buying traffic, not buying PageRank.

They don't want you to EXPLOIT or DISTORT the system.

They only want to kill your business if it's based on buying and selling PageRank.

And if it is, really... what did you expect?

Guess soon I will wake up to a day when pagerank is vanished. No more numbers. No green bar. Google Analytics rules the days further. GA weightages instead of PR.
