i can not give you any number for this but it's allways better to build backlinks slowly. building backlinks too fast may be a reason for sandbox

I think it depends a lot on the size/age of the site.

A new site picking up 50 backlinks per day is not the same as an established site picking up 50 per day.

You posted that within a half hour of your first post...

That, in a way, shows you are impatient, and likely inclined to not take the advice of others saying to slow down....so I'll not give you that advice.

Though, I do say, if you are submitting to slower sites, directories, article places and the like, then google is not following all those links every day. If you go out and get 100 links today then none for a few days that may very well look like slow building in the eyes of Google.

I have google alerts set up, and some of the hits I get from that are over a week old.

Though, if you are going to do 50 a day, every day, that may catch up with you...

    Nobody knows the exact number.
I would suggest you to concentrate on quality rather than quantity.

A few links on forums won't get penalized by google.
Just make sure you don't make them thousands ;)

If you use a service that guarantees links and if that service links you to 50 sites every day for 30 days, at the end of that period, you will have exactly 1500 links, is that natural? NO. It would produce a synthetic graph.. a straight line clearly showing the search engines you are up to chicanery. Same thing goes for services that link you to hundreds or thousands of sites in the same day period (or other short term period).

Natural means this: you obtained 5 links today, none for the following 4 days, 2 the next day, none the next 4 days, 1 the following day, 8 the following day none the next week, then 1, then none for two weeks, then 7 the next day, and so on.. that would produce a jagged or "natural" low volume graph. Exactly what the search engines want to see.

Why do I keep mentioning "synthetic graph"? Because its specifically noted in Google's 2003 patent:

"A sudden growth in the number of apparently independent peers, incoming and/or outgoing, with a large number of links to individual documents may indicate a potentially synthetic web graph, which is an indicator of an attempt to spam"

Like others have mentioned there is no golden rule on how many links you can post before Google considers your linking spam. You'll have to judge it case by case. There would be a variety of factors involved in having Google ban your website. For one having a bunch of bad sector links (link farms). Or having a bunch of new links from completely unrelated websites pointed towards your website can definitely give it away to Google. But really it all depends on how you implement your linking strategy and how targeted you are.

I disagree, if this were true it would make competitor sabotage possible, you cannot control who links to your site, worst thing that happens is the incoming link is devalued by Google, they cannot punish you for an incoming link from unrelated sites or link farms.

It depends! If you have 0 links it's different from someone with 100,000... Everything in life regarding getting "flagged" is ratios. Just remember that. IF you have nothing don't get 20000 in one day...
