    Hi there,

I have two SEO related questions and I will be thankful for any kind of help.

    1. Eighteen characters long domain name is good for SEO or not?

    2. If domain A redirects the visitors to the domain B then is there any negative effect on the domain B from SE and SEO point of view.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Best Regards

For the first bit, 18 is tad too long for SEO.

1 - i dont think it really matters but it is very big lol
2 - why would it have negative effect? just site A wont really get much attention or get indexed.

thats about all the answer that come out into my head for those questions.

    Hi kashifkb,

    To answer to your question,

1 - 18 characters is good for SEO, these days its difficult to get a shorter one :)
2 - No Negative Effect. In fact domain B will get indexed if its a new one. If its a permanent redirect some times PR is also passed.

Think i shld chip in a little to correct some misconception.

Actually, i don't think its good to have such long domain, prob not so much in terms of SEO. The reason why the short ones are taken up, is because they are much catchier and easier to remember. In terms of SEO, your domain matters with regards to the keywords that you are targeting. If you are targeting, 'i like soup and fries' keywords on the Search Engines, then i domain like 'ilikesoupandfries.com' would be great. So if the 18 char long domain is precisely what you are targeting, then its good. However, with that being said, it is generally not good to target such long keywords as it means very few searches, although prob more targeted searches. So it is necessary to have a balance keyword, that has a relatively good number of searches, yet not too small.

The biggest setback wld be you losing all your Pagerank and it will take time for SiteB to get indexed by SE's and gain pagerank. i wld assume that you will stop marketing site A after redirecting rite? If so, then perhaps the other setback is that those backlinks gained for siteA will not be fully transferred to siteB. Some juice may get passed along due to the redirect, but its not clear how much.

    My 2 cents.....

    Hi All,

Thanks a lot for your replies.

Actually 18 character long domain name is the combination of my company name and two very hot keywords.

Let's say that my company name is Techno and my targeted keywords are web solutions.

So the domain name would be technowebsolutions.com.

Now please tell me is it good to have that long domain that also contain my targeted keywords.

Secondly the visitors from domain A will be redirected towards the domain B so any bad effect on domain B with regards to search engine optimization.

I will be really thankul for any help.

    Best Regards

i am assuming you want to redirect your visitors to the new domain name. use a 301 redirect and there will be no probs in SEO. PR, backlinks, etc that domain A receives is transferred to domain B with 301.

i think 18 is fine, depends on what words, but don't expect ppl to type it in. for example, a 18 character company name is just bad, the example you give IMO is fine, rather easy to rmb for a 18 char domain name. still, a shorter one will be better. i rarely see companies with a 18 char long domain name website
