I never insist on installing mods.
And more, sometimes I'm honest enough to say: MAN, this mod is not for you.

The car analogy does not really fit. You can have lots of mods and still recieve no submissions.

Promotion is what will bring in submissions, sure it helps to have a nice looking directory with a few bells and whistles but the mods alone won't make or break your directory.

At last the correct answer to the OP, 100% you should pay for something from which you will benefit from and will show ROI:cool:

Very smart, and very true. Not every mod is for every directory. The problem is every web directory is trying to please everyone to make money from all ends.

Exactly britishguy you are spot on, ROI is what it's all about, and if the initial invesment is low with no need to further invest more, your ROI is going to be quicker and bigger. The math...

Script A; = say $100 all in, it contains all features your likely to need and then some.

Script B; = say $75 but to get it to the level of script A you need to pay $100 for one mod, $15 for another mod, and so on until it is equal to that of script A.

Which one would common sense tell you is the one to buy? Or do we buy mods because we are told its cool?

The thread's been an interesting one, and it has to be conceded that the die hard fan of mod reliant scripts show a general support for thier own scripts which is admirable if not conducive to good business. Me I think I'll go alone with popotalk's common sense approach below....

@jg123, your kinda right, car analogy doesn't always fit not the one where someone said a script/car needs an oil change? A script should never need 'oil changes', (didn't get that one myself)

@popotalk, I guess some people want to buy lower end car to pimp, some people would prefer to buy a higher end car already pimped! :)

Good mass debate though, I reckon its worn thin now, with my conclusion that some people just don't get it, if you can get more for less this has to be good, but hey, if people want to spend more money than they really need to then so be it.

Make your own minds up I say, thanks for the contributions to the thread.

I use both paid spam guard and deeplink by Rob and some free mods it depends on what it for and I figure in the long run I will get my money back in ROI

Interesting to see all those who use mods seem to have a misguided loyalty to spending unecessary money on mods when several script already have them.

I have to be honest, there is not a chance in hell would I pay a $100 for one mod no matter who the programmer is, no disrespect to this an0n guy, but a $100 for a single mod? Whoah, he must be raking it in off you guys, one mod cost more than n entire script that contains this mod and better! People have to be crazy to think that's good business when you can get it for free on other scripts.

It's interesting to note that 99% of people who think paying extra for mods are users of one sole script, is this a case of misguided loyalty perhaps as it sure as eggs are eggs isn't good business practice.

As for deep link mods, as they are 'all the rage' at the moment shouldn't they be intergrated into a script for free?

I'm too new on this forum to know who this an0n guy is but I know he hasn't been around long, what if I say made a mod exactly the same as his or better and sold it for half or even a quarter of the price, would people buy it from me or still go to buy it from this an0n guy?

Your skirting the issue, if the mods are already in a script isn't it false economy to go paying $100 for it? Or even $15 for one?

I think that you should take a couple of business classes, honestly. Do you know how much more directory owners are making just because of his mods? So why in the world would you not pay for something if you can make the money back within a day or two just by using it?

Business does not make allowances for skirting the issues, it is always a case of supply and demand, strongly supported by back up and online functionality errata checking and corrective feedback.

There will never be a single time when savvy business people skirt issues, to be in a winning position you have to support a winning product, even if your preferred product sometimes offer more 'bells n whistles' when you are dealing with data in a dynamic environment you have to select the robust product that ensures 365/24/7 functionality

Its really that clear and simple.

You pay the price, you get the product, you get the functionality, you get the support, you get revenue generated

Let me simplify that on a Directory you buy a Mod it works you generate revenue and get ROI

On an Oil Refinery you have TDC/DCS system you put in products that don't work you blow up the Refinery

    Is that clear enough

You can never overpay when a product generates revenue, and gives 100% Functionality Performance

That's why I said you need a good engine as well. The engine is link building, trust, age of domain etc. etc... :D

Some of us have PR6 directories and bring in solid $ each month, why would we switch our WHOLE STRUCTURE to avoid a 100$ mod? You obviously make 0$ with your dir so you can't justify spending. There are always people with bigger revenue and deeper pockets. I just hate it when someone who has a) has no money or b) is too damn cheap tries to tear apart a product that works because THEY don't like it. If you don't like it Phoenix don't buy t but your making an A$$ of yourself telling people it's bad business sense when the product increases revenue and "ROI" the catch acronym you love using so much.

This debate is just like one in vBulletin over vBSEO. It's the people who think it's too much that make all these excuses. If you don't like it fine but don't try and discredit something because you aren't into it.
