    Former Cortland police officer sentenced

    Jefferey "Chip" Stockton
A former Cortland police officer will spend six months
in jail for killing a woman while driving drunk in November of last year.

Jefferey "Chip" Stockton pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, vehicular assault, D-W-I and failure to use due care. Stockton was driving drunk when he hit Lynn Briggs and Melody Benn in an intersection. Briggs died from her injuries.

Stockton was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation each for the vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault charges and 60 days in jail and three years probation for the DWI. But Stockton will serve out all three sentences at the same time, so it will be just the six months.

Stockton must also develop a program on the dangers of drunk driving and present it to all high schools in Cortland County.

He does not have to report to jail until June 4th.

This is a common thing in eastern europe. Except the jail part.
I come from there, so no "anti-american" stuff!

Great contribution! Keep up the good work! ;)

Six months for killing a woman while driving drunk? How is that justice? Six months isn't even enough time for the family to grieve. He'll be free while her family is still struggling. Disgusting...

Let's just hope there's a family member who knows where he lives.

Hey, he'll have a hell of a time in jail. A crook in jail is one thing, but a cop in jail is very different. Afterall, to most, a cop is a cop, whether he did anything to the crook, or not. Better not drop the soap.

that's sick, he must have known the judge

6 months is a drop in the bucket...whereas the victim's family will never get Lynn back.

Like I said, you're thinking about it from the victim's family's point of view.

Here's another one of Vadym's beautiful analogies.

You're a South Korean traitor (Cop) that wakes up one day to find yourself in North Korea (Prison). You can't escape, and you must live there for 6 months. We've all see the types of torture being administered that North Korea administers. (Being a bitch of a 300 lb guy named Bubba for 6 months) And the best part is, South Korea (Prison guards) won't help you, but will rather enjoy seeing you suffer.

Now put yourself in his shoes. As sad and cruel as it is, the girl only took a few hours to die. His distended anus will kill him over the course of a few months.

There was this guy in my town that killed his wife and daughter with a knife just 2 years ago. He did not go to jail because he was found insane in the moment he killed them, he went into a mental hospital. Now he is soon out on the streets again and he says that he look forward to form a family again.

This is how it is here. If you are insane you get "away". I dont say that you should put insane people in jail with criminals, I dont like that, but for this guy to go an form a new family, well...

Ok, the guy got 6 months for killing somebody. Do you really think they are sending him to Sing-Sing's "lifers wing" ?

Cheap, It is more like free. He should've been sent to the gas chamber or shouldve been given a tougher punishment than normal because he was a cop.

That's total bullsh*t. There was a cop here that pre-meditated killing his wife for the insurance money, did it, and when he got caught only got 7 years!

There's a double standard when it comes to law enforcement. I don't care if their time is rough in prison, because it's just as hard in there for child molesters, rapists, and snitches. If anything, cops should be held MORE ACCOUNTABLE than citizens, since they are the ones entrusted with the power. If your time is hard in prison, there's a reason for it, and you deserve it. That doesn't mean you should get less time though. Where's the equality in this?

I'm so sick of seeing cops walk away with a slap on the wrists. If this would have been anyone else they would've gotten multiple years, not 0.5 years.
