    Hi All,

I have gotten quite a few posts surprised that my directory requires registration before submitting a site. Registration consists of:
    username
    email
    password
    aggree to TOS
    spam code
    (takes less than a minute)

Then user must activate link in their email. Logon to site, and then they can submit listing.

Is there another way to do it?
    What does your directory require?
How do you avoid spam without registration?

Captcha images eliminate most of the spam. I don't require registration on my directories, and usually I won't register at another directory to submit links. Just too time consuming when your doing alot of submissions.

Registration is too time consuming and thus people don't want to have to do it.

I think registration is a good idea, however, I'LL not be implementing it unless my directories become famous

people will always skip registration, until and unless the directory is really worth it, but then am planning to make a directory which will require registration. i want to provide the members with a control pannel to manage there listings! let's see if it works:)

Registration is really taking too much of time. I personally never submitting sites into dirs which are asking for reg. unless and until its really worth to be listed there.

Like others I my self, hate having to register wait for an e-mail, verify the sign-up log back in submit a link, verify the link, its a long process and it just adds 5 more minutes to my link submissions. I think 80%+ of people submitting to directories will just pass your directory if they see you have to register.

The more difficult you make it for submitters, the less likely they will submit.

Registration is one of the biggest deterrents. We tried that route and our submissions declined. Captcha is enough of a problem to deal with for most, and some will pass on submitting to directories (both free/paid) requiring image validation.

There is an alternative solution from a third party that works well in eliminating spam for a popular directory script.

Registration? definitely not, I've also removed captcha with no big spam problems (phpld 3.1). I want to make it as easy as possible for people to submit to my directories.

We don't use Captcha or registration and waste less than 10 min a day with spam.

If a directory requires registration, I like many, just go to the next directory. Very seldomly ever worth the time to do the registration.

Regging is a definite directory killer.

You should make it not required, but if they do they can basically make edits - make it optional...

Only top quality directories can afford to require registration.

For all other directories it would mean a loss of many submissions....even when they are being offered for free.

Yes, get a script that can cover all bases, one that can ask your submittor to sign the next declaration of independance, or one that allows you to switch everything off and only require link and description even without capture but then your running the risk of getting spammed to hell and back.

There are a few out there, phpLynx being my obvious choice to recommend as I'm building my directory using it.

Registration is required on my directory. However I'm allowing users to create and edit their links combined with some cool stuff. I've thought about perhaps auto generating their registration details providing they provide just valid email address to allow them to amend stuff. Not sure how many submissions I'm losing but then again quality is the key for my site.
