Alexa gets it stats from the toolbar. Just like any statistical methods, it works fairly well, for sites that have good traffic. For those sites outside top 100,000 the traffic is too less for a statistical average, and so can be incorrect. But for sites with more traffic, alexa is proven to be fairly accurate.

Whether it is correct or note, alexa is the only source to find the traffic details of any site. Together with google PR and few other parameters, alexa ranking should give you a failrly good idea about a site.

Please note that it is not very difficult to fake alexa ranking - don't ask me how :)

Yes, Alexa counts it's stats only among those who are in the herd of Alexa toolbar users

Alexa is just a computations of approximate traffic of your site..... It is different from SERP..

I have an occult site that ranks into the top 100,000 (currently hovering around 80k). There is no real reason for this, as I've mentioned it on my boards, and thus far no members have come forward about using the toolbar other then myself & two others.

I've taken to ignoring it figuring if a site in my niche can break into the top stats something must be skewed...especially since I'm only getting 300 uniques a day...

IMHO, if you want Alexa to count for anything, then you should likely push the use of Alexa on your site. The more people that do that, the more it'll count overall.

alexa ranks can be manipulated, but then getting under 100k is not all that easy, also the ranks under 10k are pretty accurate!:D

but then, alexa ranks are based on the toolbar values only, and the toolbar has a lot of spywares, so most people don't use it, this is the reason why alexa stats can easily manipulated.:)

The fact that only visits from users having the Alexa toolbar makes me want to ignore that their stats. Not everybody has their toolbar anyway.

Another thing is that it can be manipulated as stated in a previous post.

With Amazon used as an affiliate, and with a custom Alexa Tool bar, it's not all that bad, and it's not considered manipulation, at least it's not "false" manipulation like paid traffic or some program would be.

While Alexa is pretty much a moot point within Webmaster circles, the average web surfer can be easily impressed by a good rank.

Like its been mentioned before, Alexa is not hard at all to fake, theres sites out there that will even help you alter your alexa ranking by sending users who use the toolbar to your site.

My feedback is Alexa ranking data is not so useful. But, anyone can use it's data to have some extra context.

Alexa can only give you the general popularity of top sites, such as Google, Yahoo. Myspace, etc. However, for lesser known sites, the results are useless.

That would make sense, I know several people that use YAHOO as thier home page, yet never (ever) use it to search. When they search they hit Google...

Top 500 maybe? Possibly even top 1000... I can only assume tweaking the system can only get you so far, and when you get that popular, it's just hard to fake.

Care to hazard a guess (opinion) of how far out it's accuracy really is?
