I am going to move to new server and don't know which one is better. what are the differences between these servers? Thanks in advance
Depends upon the type of application you're looking to run, traffic, budget etc. AMD CPUs are generally my choice, especially newer opterons.
We are talking about over 100 independent forums working on phpbb. There is about 800 000 daily users total on all forums. Now system runs on Celeron 1GHz with 512 MB RAM and it is to slow.
I wonder how the 1GHZ celeron is still running with all this load! BTW, go for a newer model no. dual core opteron with atleast 2GB RAM. I'd prefer SATA RAID HDDs.
Let us know about your monthly budget and other requirements like managed/unmanaged...I will try to link to some good deals. You can also look at the WHT offers section.
Even though woodcrest processors are faster, the LGA 771 platform is more expensive. Go for atleast an AMD dual core ( AM2 opteron) 2ghz processor.
I could pay $200-300 monthly for dual core (or xeon maybe?) with unix, 2MB RAM, 160GB HD and min 20Mb bandwidth.
Woodcrest arent that good though. If you can go with Clovertown, go with hem. Better than Opteron's Otherwise, Stick with Opteron.
@agnivo007 seems you are an expert in this area, i just wondering how do we determine on which type of hard drive we have... I'm not sure if I'm getting IDE or SATA... thanks
If you haven't bought a server, then check the specifications...if its not mentioned there, ask the sales team what kind of HDDs they are bundling with the box. If you have an existing server and have control panel like cpanel, then in server info you can see the model no of your disk...search with the model no. and you know if its SATA or IDE Through SSH, you can try this too : (doesnt seem to work on VPSs) dmesg hdparm -i /dev/(hdd name eg-hda) Well, I'm not an expert...someone might be able to give you some better tips regarding this...
if you want a server for longterm , i suggest you buy it from dell.com on either one time or monthly installments and then colocate it . It would come to around 100$ a month . And after 4 years the server is yours! . Contact me if you need help with this .
