I don't know which one is better to go for. But I think this way---

Paid Directories: Anyone can get listed for $$. So search engines cannot give more value to paid directory links.

Free Directories: Free directories approve sites when they find they are good to list. So seach engines should give more value to free directory links.

    How to differenciate??
    By submit page.

    Am I wrong.

    I think I should open a poll.

I don't believe search engines give preferance to either one. If I were you I would submit to a mix of both (I do). Choose only quality directories free or paid. The advantage with paid directories is that you usually get listed quicker and they have tend to list you on pages with higher page rank. Buy some featured links too because they will keep you on the front page of the category where you get the most bang-for-your-buck.

There could be an argument that free links is just FFA (free-for-all) link farm and paid links you are paying for a site review for inclusion, so if you look at it that way then you would thinking the opposite :)

well your $$$ everyone gets in theory is just that.... If your site is garbage then why would you go paying to have it listed? i think i would rather pay to get my site redone and in tip top shape before i go spending or even submitting to free or paids... and with the way things are going you had best watch whom you link to if your a directory owner as you will be possably flagged for linking with crap sites...

    thx

FREE Submission is FFA...?? NOT AT ALL... I guess.

FREE directories like DMOZ ... very strict while approving. BTW... why one should give links to all for FREE and spoil his own site.???

Im not talking about YOUR site i mean in general... ;)

Quality is now a factor when a directory links to someone
as WE (the directory owners) will be punished by google
for allowing Poor quality sites to enter our directory

I think the need for a cross-section comes from the fact that a lot of free directories are full of trashy links so can’t keep a stable ranking. Paid links often avoid this problem, however submitting to many paid directories can soon add up.

The key is to select a balance between cost, quality, and link quantity.

    Ahh...

You all are strongly voting for both. And I think something else.

I think we need to wait for few more google algo updates. Big G may list my point in its great math.

I head that MattCutt is also talking something like paid links are going to be given less importance and they will be decouraged.

If so then Paid directories will be the first one to victimized.

    What do you think?

Go for paid directories, in general they tend to have a larger budget on advertising so your submission will be promoted more.

Usually the free directories are overwelmd with submissions and your listing could end up deep in the directory.

Great Point. This is the argument which is convincing me. :)

But How DMOZ and few other Free directories are far better than most of the paid directories?

There are some excellent free directories around but if you select free only, then don't look down because will you will not be able to go down any lower in the order

You will be down at the bottom looking up

Not least because on many free directories expect to wait months for acceptance, that is if they even bother to get round to look at your submission, let alone approve it

It seems that you should read the sticky thread at the top of this category to get some understanding of the market
