Online marketeers why don't they want to work from home?

    Hi all,

I'm really frustrated and confused, I thought you guys might be able to help.
I have a very succesful online print/design business, bit like Vistaprint but better :)

I was hoping to recruit an online marketeer, someone to look after my ppc accounts, negotiate banner ads, find new online marketing advertising opportunities and analyse the results using analytics or similar software. I see no need for them to work from our offices whatsoever. This is a job they can perform from anywhere in the world, all they need is a laptop and an internet connection. I have been speaking to recruitment consultants specialising in marketing and they all tell me I have no chance. People don;t want to work from home I am being told. Is this your experience? I can't believe it I thought people would prefer to work from wherever they want?

Some people really do love their jobs. At least this is just my opinion on why some people wouldn't want to work from home.

Perhaps recruitment consultants are the wrong way to go.
Any ideas on the best way to advertise the job?

I'm going through a similar situation these days. I've been working full time for an Internet Marketing firm and handling several projects for clients. Our office has around 20 people working together on several projects, including web designers, a team or senior and junior web developers, online marketers (including me) and of course content writers and some data entry / updation staff.

I also work as a freelancer and work on my sites when ever I get a chance.

The problem with working from home is that firstly, you might not be paid as much as working as a full time employee at some company where you get to benefit extra things like paid leaves, bonuses etc.

Secondly, when you work with other people in a competitive environment, you get to learn new things from their experience. Also, you interact with people and discuss and share ideas. When you work from home, you *can* become lazy as you will no longer be following a daily office routine. (I'm not saying you WILL become lazy, but in most cases, you might.)

Also, if you work from home, you have to use your own resources and you wouldn't get any extra benefit out of it.

So I'd prefer to work full time with some company and take on projects to work from home. But I will not be willing to work full time from home, due to the above mentioned reasons. Just my 2 cents.

Its not strange that they dont want to work from home. many people need to separate work and off-time. Not like us :D
Another thing, if you go away to work, normally you will concentrate better than sitting home.

If you have a way to check progress with your client I think that would be best. Then just post it on the Services section of this forum. Lots of Marketing people here. :)

i love to work from home... and i am working from home from last 3 years. i have many sites online from which i earn through adsense, affilates, and some click bank style site to sell some products through PPC. and do some freelance good work that pay me hand some amount.
i never want to join any office, but in these i am thinking to have my own ware house.

Just another thing to add to rosiee's list.

I mean, would you stay home 24/7? All the day? Wth your wife there? What excuse you gonna get when you wanna leave out and stay anywhere but not close to your wife's talk about what she shopped today? (hell yeah, i am just kidding, i feel in that mood today).

Anyway, rosiee made some interesting points, and points that have sense. I work from home this last month...and i get so bored, i think i will get back to get me a job (even tho that would take lots of my time being online and would influence in my online incoming, but at least, i won't be watching my wall, my screen and my GF only...sometimes changing a "picture" is good).

Just my 3 cents (and i want the rest of 1 cent).

I would work from home in a heartbeat. the problem is job security. Most people with guaranteed work are forced into a cubicle from 8-5. I don't think I would ever quit my job until I had done it for at least a couple of months and that there was proof that there would be ongoing work and that the company is stable.

Trapped and PHPGator raised some very good points here too.

I once had to sit home because I quit my full day job, and that 1 week was soo boring and tiring for me when i stayed home :p lol

I think if you go to an office regularly, you are more active and in the routine to work.

Also, as PHPGator said, you need to first make sure that you have *enough* work to do from home and that you are working for a stable company. I wouldn't want to get myself in sh*t by quitting my day job for some freelancer work for a Company I don't even know about. Who knows they may tell me next month 'we don't need your services any more' !

I worked from home for about 6 months.. oh how it sucked :) So I got myself a nice office instead, both to get out of the house and to meet other people working with similar things. It's actually quite nice to have some people around, to have lunch and coffee with etc. Also I have made more money than I would have if I was still working from home. This made sense for me, might not for others.

However, I still work when I get home but "only" on my private projects.

i would say you better change the consultant.. seem like he doesnot know anything about marketing at all. there are many people who are working from home and really desperate to get a job to do and earn extra money. find the right way and right place you will got tons of people doing work for you.
