how to find out where competitors advertise online?

someone recently asked me if there is a way to find out what your competitors are doing in terms of online advertising. they mentioned that in print and offline there is a system called MMS.

Does anyone know of a either a system used to find out about online or can perhaps suggest their own method to researching competitors?

I usually google the competitors name and include the keyword 'advertising' and maybe i'll find an article or case study written by its advertising agency. although the results might not include anything that they've done online.

just see their backlinks you will find places where they advertise, you have to do little research for sure, coz it wont be easy to find what keywords they are advertising in ppc networks.

For Keyword research, you can use the Keyword Suggestion Tool at Digital Point site. Your competitor will have the same keywords as for your site. Search those Keywords using the tool and see the suggestions. Use a Search Engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN to find the top ranking sites for those Keywords and see if your competitor is doing better than you.

Also, as forumrating mentioned above, it will be a good idea to see where the competitors are getting their links from. You can use the Back Links Tool to check which sites are linking to your competitors and which are linking to you.

Check this out: http://www.spyfu.com not all websites will be available but it's a cool little tool

Type in your competitors website, if they have been around awhile, it will have some info on them.
