restricting discussion to content-rich sites, what are the reasons for high bounce rates? other than too many affiliate links/adverts.

There's many factors which makes a site sticky. If you are experiencing high bounce rates for a content rich site it could be one of many reasons:

    - Site design (colours, font sizes/styles etc)
    - Page load time
    - Popups/popunder ads
    - Poor quality content (dont assume the content is good or related to what your user is looking for)

Are you experiencing this issue? If so what's the site? We can take a look and make some recommendations perhaps.

i'm not particularly experiencing it, no (there would be a thread in 'reviews' if i was). i just read in a tech newspaper about the problem of 'stickiness'.

by poor quality, assuming it was relevant, how would you define poor quality? bad english? monotonous?

Sometimes its the type of site it is. Often people come to a site from the search andgines and find the content on the page. If you look at some very popular sites, they often have a page view per unique of 1 or 2.

What about an overload of text (lacking graphics/photographs in the content area). It may be overwhelming for some visitors.

which begs the question, why? ")

an opinion as expected from a designer. :D but yes, that might be the reason....to be sticky and ugly at the same time you need to be Google Klone.

Abot.com, one of the most popular internet destinations has a page view per unique of just above 1 (on average).
