What is with del.icio.us?

How come the domain is seperated like that? I don't get it. It forms the word "delicious" (an odd word for a social bookmarking site), so it doesn't seem to be random, but is there an actual domain extension, like icio.us, and they just picked del because then it spells delicious? I've always wondered.

    they just registered icio.us
and made icio.us redirect right to del.icio.us (subdomain)
    :D

Also they're first in Google out of 79.8 million results for the world 'delicious'

    So it's not bad

It is a way of branding, and it was successful.

icio.us does not redirect to del.icio.us, it says "host not available". But that does make sense, about it being a subdomain, but still, that's really weird how they did that. Good branding though.

Too bad there are already a bunch of copycat sites which use that kind of naming. de.lirio.us, ma.gnolia to name a few

Try explaining the name to someone out loud (who isn't familiar with it). "no, not the word delicious, but del <dot> icio ...."

You won't have to because delicious.com redirects to del.icio.us. Just tell them it's delicious.com.

Wow, didn't really know that :) I just thought they separated the name because the whole word version was taken.

They probably acquired the .com after they became large enough.

Why is delicious so popular anyway? It has a weird name and a bland design. I just don't get it.

because it's number one in google for some things...so it stays popular for that, and because it has a PR of 8...

those are always two things that will keep a site on top for a while, not to mention the fact that it has a lot of good stuff tagged a lot...it's not popular because of the name or look...it's just a good site :D
