How come the domain is seperated like that? I don't get it. It forms the word "delicious" (an odd word for a social bookmarking site), so it doesn't seem to be random, but is there an actual domain extension, like icio.us, and they just picked del because then it spells delicious? I've always wondered.
icio.us does not redirect to del.icio.us, it says "host not available". But that does make sense, about it being a subdomain, but still, that's really weird how they did that. Good branding though.
Too bad there are already a bunch of copycat sites which use that kind of naming. de.lirio.us, ma.gnolia to name a few Try explaining the name to someone out loud (who isn't familiar with it). "no, not the word delicious, but del <dot> icio ...."
Wow, didn't really know that I just thought they separated the name because the whole word version was taken.
nope, just a really good idea for a unique form of branding ... it's sad though...i never even really paid attention to the fact that is spelled a word...lol
because it's number one in google for some things...so it stays popular for that, and because it has a PR of 8... those are always two things that will keep a site on top for a while, not to mention the fact that it has a lot of good stuff tagged a lot...it's not popular because of the name or look...it's just a good site
actually there are quite a few such domains, like grou.ps but then delicious is on a subdomain actually! people are creative enough to get such domains!
its called a domain hack there are lots, like blo.gs, etc I even got lucky and sold pro.xylicio.us for $80 (it was a 2 in the morning reg :-P)
