    Hey everyone,
was just wondering what people here think about sustainability as being a viable niche for a website. My day job is in sustainability so Im personally qualified to make relatively high quality content, im just not sure whether there would be a sufficient demand for it. I was leaning towards the purchasing side of sustainability, green buying guides and whatnot.
thanks in advance for your replies

the book definition is 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future' but it's a very broad term that generally means implementing more environmentally and socially friendly practices (recycled products, organic, fair trade, no child labor etc.)
in business, as well as in the public sector and for individuals its a massive new trend.
as far as google goes, the competition doesnt look overly fierce. there are so many terms under sustainability that it looks like both a gift and a curse (lots of low competition keywords but no single overarching one with tons of searches) there are quite a few very major sites from public institutions and non profit organizations involved, but very few private and commerce sites in the niche. dont really know what to make of it

well if you can think of a commerce solution for it I'd say to run with it...

If you can make your site more unique than the others in that niche, and know (or can learn) so good SEO...you'll of course have a decent shot at making something of it.

Definitely room for a really awesome all inclusive site about bio-fuels or solar power.

my area of expertise is more along the lines of relating sustainability to supply chain management and purchasing that to a particular good such as energy

no problem :)...if you do the blog though, make sure to monetize it good and get it out to a lot of places :D

...if sustainability is a big thing and you know some good sites/forums that cover the topic...one good technique to use would be doing articles and then mentioning them at those sites and getting the diggs coming in...

just launched a product combining solar with LEDs. I definitely believe in the lasting presence of "going green" and think sustainability will be here for a long time to come.

send me a pm if you're interested, would def like to hear more.

    very interesting...
I'm considering something in this area myself. but its hard to gauge definite numbers to forecast anything.

yes sustainability is a broad area. blogging would be a good idea.

it's all the rage with the global warming crap right now. make sure to keep it in subjects regular stupid people can relate to. avoid deeper, more real issues like sustainable farming, sustainable energy resources, etc. and focus on make environment healthy stupid stuff.

Im pretty sure sustainability is only going to get bigger in the coming years, im really just wondering whether there is currently enough interest to really get into it.

that does sound like a very interesting product. how advanced in your development are you? generally even the most progressive sustainable purchasing guides only advocate CFL lighting systems at this stage but the consensus is that LEDs are the future once the technology advances. id certainly like to hear more about your product
