I'm just about to launch my own directory so would like to know if getting a directory script indexed by Google is easy and what is the normal average time for not only Google but the others like Yahoo and MSN?

Whell why should your directory be any diffrent from any other website?
You will get indexed faster if you get inbound links and people love you.
But usualy there is not really much a spider cand index in a new starting directory.

i think it's not related with your directory script. if you have strong backlinks with good seo, you will be indexed easly

Backlinks lots of backlinks, sitewides lots of sitewides, and just improve its contents by adding category and sub category listings, descriptions.

    Most importantly :

If its FREE, offer some members a limited amount of listings or put a $0.25 just to avoid SPAM.
(Some DP Members will SPAM You Bigtime with BULK BOT SUBMISSIONS.)
If its PAID just improve it and HIDE it for the moment till update.

    Thanks

The latest and tops links pages on my PHPLD have certainly got G hooked, homepage get's recached every other day and new detail pages are usually indexed within 2 days. Yahoo I am still having problems with, only 200 pages indexed so far.

Thanks Malcolm, is there a quick way without going on to these forums and without backlinks?

@popotalk, I want to try and avoid backlinks for now as I don't want rival niche directories getting wind of what I'm up to.

I released a free template design along with a demo link to a brand new website. This was maybe yesterday or two days ago, and 20 pages are indexed so far heh :)

well the only other way of getting back links that i am aware of is...

social book marking like Del.icio.us and the others though i would be buying links like popo told ya
and like Dave E also said the spiders will frequent your site every other day like on king and sleek

    thx

The plan I have Malcolm is to get indexed without letting rivals know my niche, I know its an uphill task to do it without backlinks and the main reason why I posted here if there was a way.

Don't forget to submit your sitemap files to Google and Yahoo.

With respect the best way to promote any directory is for sure to let your competitors know who you are, and what you are about.

If your directory is complete and up and running then its essential its get seen amongst top directories in that niche

If your Directory is quality you will gain respect and recognition, if your Directory is not very good, then they will notice that too, and you will get blasted out of the market very quickly

Be smart don't try to compete with any Directory, don't disparage other Directories, make your Directory unique, gain marketshare will ensure recognition

And treat all quality Directory Owners with respect, it pays off, the other way is the most inept used and most unsuccessful, blast away how great you are and all that B/S and inside 2 or 3 days your Directory will be gone blasted into oblivion

Good Luck with your venture :)
