I hear it all of the time. A lot of the time my work gets pushed to the side simply because I don't get up in the morning to commute to an office. It seems many people mistake what we do as "easy", simply because we don't have the same stress another employee in the "real world" would... but stress levels can be high when you have invested money and time into an idea that quite possibly will fail.

I still think the worst (for me anyway) is when they ask:

"How are you doing? Is everything ok? Are you SURE what you're doing is legal? The Internet is dangerous..."

I've even had problems calling people via SKYPE because they're not convinced it's legit. Once they hear I'm calling "via the Internet" they think it's a scam and some government agency is gonna start spying on them!!!!!

    UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I've only been here 2 days...and I can already tell what a great community DP is... what a great feeling knowing there's others out there like me doing my own thing and making the "real world" what I want it to be. Cheers to all the self-motivated risk takers out there!

You know how many times I've walked into the bank with a check or a question about transferring money and the clerk has looked at me like I'm some sort of criminal? Probably about a hundred times. Guess they aren't used to dealing with 19 year olds who make five figures a month.

Hah! Tell me about it. They always seem hesitant when they hand that teenager a few thousand bucks in cash.

Yes, from my experience it's better to say people something they will believe to. Unemployed, winning lottery all the time, poker player or whatever. Cause 1) I really don't care 2) It makes them happy somehow, lol. So win-win case:)

Hah, i'm a teenager and always get told to get a "real job", for me that means working for minimum wage which is a joke in my area since you only get a few dollars for working hard all day. Working for myself definitely pays off and i just ignore it when people tell me that. I also hear the "are you sure what you are doing is legal" ALL the time.

Sometimes when people ask me if it's legal or not I tell them it isn't and I'm a criminal. So I'll go on and on explaining what I do, but when they think it's illegal they don't want to hear anything and act horrified I'm telling them. Mind you, I'm just explaining affiliate/ppc/seo, haha.

Dumb people can be fun to talk to sometimes. Some of the smarter morons catch on though. :D

How do you manage to find the energy to explain about what you are doing to the askers

When somebody asks me what I am doing, I just simply answered NOTHING coz I think it's tedious and tiring to explain just only to get answerd with disbelieving snorts.

Worst part for me, at least in the first months, was getting my wife to understand that the "honeydo lists" are going to have to wait...I'm working!!

Very true. And it was very difficult for me to make my wife realize how important my work is even if I am working from my home.

In Canada, tommorow (Monday 21st) is a good example of friends and families confusion.

It is a Easter holiday tommorow, so most people get the day off from work. My girlfriend has already scheduled a few things to do throughout the day, and automatically assumes I am going because it is a holiday.

However, about 90% of my customers are American, which do NOT get this day off. I try to explain to the girlfriend how even though it is a holiday, I still need to work and support my clients. You could imagine the frustration and yelling that follows.

I can definitely relate to this. People don't understand how hard we work or the long hours we put in. People think that we are just playing around and not really working. They don't understand that we spend most of our time researching and developing our next project so it does not fail.
