Hi i feel like a technonothin but i just cannot seem to understand how to work with wireless internet.

I have a desktop pc with modem but this is shared computer and for work i need my own access so i purchased a laptop but what i dont understand is the wireless issue.

As far as i gather i plug the wireless router into my modem with an ethernet cable then plug it in to the power outlet then that is it if i am wrong please do correct me.

But were i am confused is do i need my pc switched on or just the modem for the wireless router to operate.

I just need to know this so i can choose which router to order.

    Any help appreciated.

Hi thanks for your reply i have just edited my question to make it more clear you see i have not yet purchased my wireless router but i just dont know which way to go.

There is so many i need help in understanding how they work you see i dont want to have to leave the pc on to use my laptop as that seems pointless so i am just unsure if the pc has to be on to use wireless.

no, the desktop pc does not need to be on. it's completely independent from the wifi & your LT.

the modem, router is all you need to be active once you have the LT running.

If it's wireless you don't need an ethernet cable ( you don't need to plug network cable to your computer ). Just configure your wireless connection.

A simple setup is to have your wireless router connected to your modem via an ethernet cable (as you mentioned). This cable plugs into the 'WAN' port on your router (Wide Area Network). You then run another ethernet from one of the 'LAN' ports (Local Area Network) to your desktop PC, and the wireless antenna connects to the laptop automagically. The laptop and the desktop are independent of each other, and merely reside on the same LAN. All you need is for the router and the modem to be switched on for either of the machines to have access to the net. The laptop is not affected if your PC is not on (and vice-versa).

Most cheap 'n' cheerful wireless routers come with at least 4 LAN ethernet ports, so you can connect more devices directly to the router with cables if you wish.

    Good luck,

    Phlegm...

G is the default wireless signal. Draft N is out now because N signal does not come out for 2 more years. I suggest using a linksys or netgear wireless router.

and of course they come with documentation, often times they'll even have a "quick-start" guide in order to assist you in setting up the router...it covers the steps, just follow those and you should be good to go!
