Does your AIM or MSN Messenger like application have minimum requirements in it's documentation?
If your machine meets or exceeds those requirements, then you should be good to go.

Overall, I'd say it is a good setup for just IM serving. But, it also depends on the internet connection
speed you have and the max number of simultaneous users you plan on having.

    The box seems weak IMO.

What's your budget? I could probably sort you out with a cheap unmetered box, with heaps of ram an cpu power.

Why do you need it physically? Is it admin/root requirerments? If so, a dedi will give you that.

But you can't expect much of a DSL line honestly.

You wont do good with that server if its at home on DSL. 1000 simultaneous is a lot!!! for that server.

But it is hard to tell you what you could do with, if you don't know what application you'll be running... What actual connection you are on and how much bandwidth a user would take up.

But I can tell you that the money it costs to run a server at home isn't that much different from getting a dedicated in a datacenter... Just the electricity bills are big bucks - and what do you do when your block looses power?

    HDD = Hard Disk Drive

That machine is much weaker than your original one in the first post.

Take my word...get a dedi box at the DC for lease. You'll thank yourself later for having done this.

I am trying to find a server on ebay, but I'm not doing too well
Do you know of anywhere I could get one for pretty cheap that would meet my project guidelines?
    Thanks

There are quite a few things to consider when getting a dedicated:

    - user base... where are they located.
    - do you need a control panel (cPanel, webmin, Directadmin etc).
    - what kind of bandwidth and usage; 10Mbps/100Mbps switch? Metered or unmetered.
    - do you need server/security management? Do you know how to secure a server. Do you know how to tweak Apache?

Last thing: get it from a reputable provider - you will save yourself headaches - and it doesn't have to cost much. Start with a small solution - thats scalable... it's no problem to get more power and bandwidth along the way.

Try to answer these as well as you can - And I can point you to providers, and I will see if you need a dedi or a VPS at first...

Depending on where you live, the DCs vary. One reputable one is Savvis, which has many locations around the world.

If you are planning on buying your own server, spend around $4k minimum. Those machines cost like $400.

    Go with a dedicated server.
Find a host that lets you upgrade RAM because if your site gets big, your going to need plenty of it.

    Mike,

Definitely stick with the first one you listed - the one listed above won't be very good. Remember that you want to leave room for growth, too (unless you want to buy a new server every year! :p).

    Cheers! :)
