Hi, with the kind support & help from fellow directory owners here, i've managed to compile a short list of painful experiences that others have made. Hopefully, we will all learn from one another and don't make the same mistakes!

Post can be found here: LinksFactory.net Blog

Comments wld be appreciated and if i've misquoted you, pls let me know and i'll correct it.

I wld be more than happy to add to the list if there are some of you eager to share too. Do mention it here and I will update the post. Tks!

My most painful experience with directories was having a baby in the middle of uploading a sql database and then pressing delete by accident when the head popped out. :D

No kidding on that one sizzler_chetan and NEVER rely on your hosts they can charge you to recover it if they have backed up.

    I agree with you.
Making a backup if one of the most overlooked things that just needs to be done. And having a reliable host is equally important.

    Hey --
Nice post you made there. I enjoyed it and thought SilkySmooth's experience was the most valuable one in terms of learning the industry tricks.:)

Ive spent so much time on this section of the forums that by time i had decided to start my first directory i had read of some of the poor experiences that some directory owners went through and managed to avoid these things.

While im not happy that someone else has had to endure the pain for people like me to learn of the small mistakes that are devastating, it has been helpful that their good advice has prevented a lot of pain for many of us.

Resulting in myself backing up db's daily, making Home Directory backups and generally taking my time over delicate actions to save a nightmare later on.

jl255, thanks for writing the blog post.

Probably the best thing I ever did was take the same route as you pipes, although I did buy my script first. Lucky gamble I guess. :)

I purchased a goddadys hosting plan for two years. After Installing PHPLD (v2.0), I never able to login to my admin panel of directory.

One suggestion from me (from my personal experience) : Never think of goddadys hosting, atleast for PHPLD directory.
