Making commercial movies for my site

I was thinking of making a couple of commercial movies for my site and post it on youtube, dailymotion, break etc.

My idea was to take clips from movies between the year 1910-1929.

I guess the copyright still apply for these movies.

How big is the risk that a movie company contacts me and ask me to remove the clips?

whats the worst that could happen?

Well, I would say that if you dont give the url to your site in the video, nobody will probably know it's you. But I beleive that would defeat the purpose.

What you want to do is illegal and I dont encourage any illegal activities.

I dont think you will get a straigth and good anwser to this. Be your own judge.

if you just posted the movie the owner (probably a movie studio) would probably just ask Youtube to remove it and send you a caution message, but since you're using it to promote you own business (for the purpose of making money), by law the owner of the copyrighted material is intitled to paid royalties. That is why you cannot use copyrighted material without the concent of the owner.

Leading on from that have a think that copyright actually includes anything online, including Images, Articles, and Music. I wonder how many people could get in trouble for using images found in places like Google Images to help them sell their own product?

I am afraid that's not the good thing you should. It's illegal.

I think you're getting some bad advice here. If the movie was made before 1923, it's in the public domain according to US law.

That being said, you can find MANY films that are in the public domain for which the copyright was never renewed. Check the Prelinger Archives for full public domain films for download: http://www.archive.org/details/movies

    Good luck!

I just wonder why people give you legal advises without any knowledge about it.

The fact is what blondeheroine mentioned and if you need to know more about it do a search for Public domain or check it on Wikipedia

    Hope it helps.

1910-1929 wouldn't be public domain, it's too new.

Best to look for video clips (stock that are royalty-free, but you have to pay) or get them off a safe public domain resource site.

    Not legal advice

    everything before 1923 goes

you can chop, edit whatever you like

however you must be careful with people in the movie

if it's crowd shot and you can't see faces you can use it

non famous people you can use it

but if you use Baster Keaton advertising your product you can have problems with estate for Keaton.

    Mike

P.S. All dvds you see on sale for $1-$4 uses entire libraries to make them
with movies after 1923 you have to know what you are doing and do search.

lot's of them are free but more complcated because of music scores and so on
    including spiderman comics :)

Be very, VERY careful about putting music in any video. No matter if it's already in the video you edit, or you put it there.

Usually you have to pay the author a fixed amount just for that, and some money for every time the movie/video is shown.

If you want to produce some videos, try Magnatune.com to license one or two tracks (prices are very reasonable).
