Neither is better, but I would use div. Div is the new standered and table is not XHTML valid.

If you were going to sell a template a XHTML/CSS tableless layout would sell for more than a HTML table layout.

I build my sites to XHTML Strict using DIV tags for layout. I then only use tables for data elements, such as a price comparison table.

Neither is better for SEO purposes. Search engines ( the S & E in SEO ) care about content, not markup. Google doesn't care about whether you use tables or divs any more than they care whether you drink espresso, drip coffee, or none at all.

Tables are perfectly valid xhtml. People didn't stop needing to display tabular data just because we really like the letter x now. But layout and graphic design aren't tabular data. You should use divs and css for that, but SEO has nothing to do with why.

Both are good at their own places, but I think div tag has got some more flexibility.

I agree, you can use a style sheet making life easy if you want to make changes. Some say using tables for layout effects seo due to the way site is read (from left to right), though i wouldnt worry about it too much.

I don't know about their search engine friendliness, but a table-less layout certainly is a challenge :)

Well, I think in the future, tables would be ignored with the help of Dreamweaver's new feature, which allows users create tableless layouts that are browser friendly
