    I usually set them up to update every 6 -12 hours hours (2-4 times a day). But just once a day would be normal. You don't want to overload your server. It all depends on the sources, but they will updated at least once per day.

    The Xbox 360 one gets thousands of pageviews per month and makes about .$30 a day or close to $15 a month. The PSP one gets less traffic (still in the thousands) but due to the higher CTR makes almost $20 a month. NO ADVERTISING. Once you get a bunch of pages added to the site everyday the search engines index it and a few specific pages will rank high even if the homepage doesn't.
