If you are good at SEO, go for it.

However if you are new to the game, and arn't back by at least a few solid years of experience i suggest please don't. There are too many self proclaimed SEO "professionals" giving the industry a bad name and taking peoples money for a bad service.

No offence, but the need to ask sort of shows your not real confident in your abilities to rank websites. Maybe a bit more learning, and develop a portfilio of your own sites ranking for competative phrases.

I told you, get your own sites ranking for competative keyphrases and start a portfolio. If you don't have sites, buy some 99c .info or .org domains and build sites and get them ranking.

Nobody will want to hire you without results ie proof you can do the job.

Also i wouldn't really call directory submissions "Doing SEO".

Charity begins at home. Start with your own sites first. Doing SEO for client is not advisable at all.

How a client with traffic afford to risk his/her site? I totally agree with sweetfunny's quote: "There are too many self proclaimed SEO "professionals" giving the industry a bad name and taking peoples money for a bad service."

This is not just the bad service but it involves huge risk of loosing the site ranks as well. SEO never born in a day, it took years of experience before offering the services to clients :)

    How to start?
Step 1: Start optimizing your own domain first.
Step2: Run several test and observe the results
Step3: Analyse if it is a short term gain or a long term.
Make a note of all successful efforts ;)

You know what they say about great minds. :D

I'm not saying you WILL as it will depend on your prices and what services you do for that money.

But you will certainly stand a better chance the more results you can show.

to get client because you need something to show in your profile then you can get clients but till than you dont have portfolio then its little bit difficult to get clients .

So firstly promote your website on competitive keywords then you can have good clients ....

You'll find it impossible to pick up any good quality clients without having a portfolio of existing rankings first. It's like a builder coming to you and admitting he's never actually built a wall before - you'd just laugh him out of there.

Also starting off in SEO is very hard. Almost all of our work comes from word of mouth from existing clients and we have a sales team that pitches into large companies. Leads from elsewhere are plentiful, but are usually low quality.

It isnt childs play... As u said you are testing ur skills do you think Clients wud allow you to test it on their site. Clients will ask for solid results and wil never let you experiment on their site.. Jus put yourself in the clients shoes..
Build some reputation first then go for it.. U'l definitely win.. All the best

It gets really under my skin people like this hoping that money will just drop out the sky, no wonder we're known as 'snakeskin sales men' :(

There are a lot of people out there who can live solely off the internet but it doesn't mean anyone can! It takes years of experience to know this stuff, to motivate yourself in the right areas and make the crazy money people can, you can't go around charging money while learning, it's just not going to happen!

Glad I got that off my chest, feel better now :)

Actually, I became a co-owner at our SEO firm after only a one minor assignment done as freelancer and no experience with running sites of my own. Perhaps it was just a luck, but I've secured several clients and by working and learning hard I've both -- 1) learned how to SEO and 2) got a reputation and 3) got the $$$.

Still, being from conventional marketing background, perhaps it was a bit easier for me.

Priyakochin, what can I say? Work hard, learn hard, market yourself, and you'll learn money --- no matter will it be freelancing, owning a SEO firm, working for other SEO firm or working for yourself.

Sure - if you have skills as a business person as well. Things like sales, promotion (big part of SEO as well), being reasonable, being the kind of person people trust (because you are to be trusted) etc.
